Default Search Function

I mean this in no way to be disrespectful to anyone, as everyone has been great in offering advice to me both on the forum and in PMs.

As a newbie myself to the Ford Barn I think it can be a little discouraging to continually see the replies to other members telling them to "search the forum", "use the search function". We all understand the that the search function is a great tool to find information. I know myself it is hard to search for things sometimes because I do not know the proper terminology or correct spelling of certain items or parts, but go without getting my question answered because I'm afraid of asking an "already answered question". I also know that with as many guys that are on the forum throughout the day, sometimes it's just easier to post a question than search through 5 pages of threads trying to find the ONE that pertains to my situation. I would bet that 75% of the treads on the front page have been covered at one time or another. If you only posted questions or comments that are "NEW", this would be a pretty boring place. Whether its "old" or "already been discussed", I still enjoy reading the comments. Please try not to discourage new members by simply dismissing them, and telling them to search the forums. If it bores you, just skip reading the thread.

Thanks for all the help, you guys are awesome. Thank you, I'll step off my "soap box" now...

Chris, if you do a search, this topic has been covered before. Just kidding! I think you've got a good point, but sometimes there is so much information involved in an answer that reading previous posts really is the best way. And usually too guys will chime in even if someone has made the "search" suggestion. Hang in there, and remember it's really all about the cars.

it's unclear to me what the search function actually searches. members have commented before to make your thread caption relevant to the issue and not a witticism etc., so I assume it searches captions and not content therein. If that assumption is correct, I would think one should structure a search that is broader than is typically advised for searches.

You are missing out by at least not trying the search function.
The biggest reason for this
is
very simply...

the same posters are not on here consistently; meaning users come and go.
By NOT searching, you may be missing out on a key comment made by someone who has not actively been on here for months or years.

Is it really that hard to scan thru a couple pages spit out by the search function?

I also think that reading comprehension plays a role here.

"it's unclear to me what the search function actually searches"

try it! It searches KEYWORDS title or otherwise, and/or by username

My problem with the search function is that it sometimes sends me off into never-never land.

I think the biggest problem with the search function is
it basically only searches one word. If you search wheel
bearing you get every post with wheel and bearing. I tried
wheel+bearing but that doesn't help.

No, and I will usually read ALL the search topics even if they don't pertain to what I'm looking for just to educate myself but a lot of times I don't have the time and just want to throw out a quick question without the "use the search function" comment.

u need to pick out descriptive words that would limit the search.
For "wheel bearing", use 'tapered' or 'roller' instead and the search will self-limit.
You will still get some extraneous stuff, but you always will with any search function on anything anywhere, even if Boolean operators were employed

Another option is to go to Google, and type it like this:
"wheel bearings" site:fordbarn.com

It will search what you have in the quotes, on this site. If there is a way to limit it to the Model A section, I dont know it, maybe someone else can chime in.
Good Luck

I was part of another forum where you got yelled at. "Go use SEARCH!"

My recommendation: If you feel tempted to type that phrase above, then perform the search yourself and post three links to the best threads. Then the original poster has some information to go by.

Another forum I am part of requires actual answers. It does not allow links to dubious answers. So that's another possible solution.

You can use the advanced search and customize your criteria. You can search by thread title, posts and the content, and by members names. You can also search using more than one word in a sequence by joining the two words with a plus sign, and to use the current example: Wheel+bearing. You are right in that it is easier on you to just ask the question, but it definitely isn't easier on the poster to re-type the reply that he has probably done a few times before. I have often searched for the person asking and provided a URL link to the search results for them. I hope this all helped.

I too have the problem using the search. The latest was when I requested if any one knew of a '29 Business Coupe picture I had view in the previous days. I was looking for ONE particular picture but could not find it in the search as I really could not remember the title of the post. One individual posted two pictures which I was very appreciative of but was not really the one I was after. After much searching I found that I had saved it to my computer,in a different file I usually use, but not in the barns threads & replys. Below is that picture......I hope. Sorry for a long winded reply but my point is that I find it very difficult to use the search engine.

Rather than search for old threads I am building my own library of clippings. I use a program called Notebook by Circus Ponies Software. It is designed for making searchable collections of info easy. I created a notebook for all my manuals and and one for Model A information. So I read the first page of the forum every day, select anything of interest, and with a right click send it to the notebook. I learn more as I read and if I need to go back for more details it is all easily accessible.

BTW time spent on this forum has been valuable in many ways. It allowed me to buy a set if Bill Stipe shocks before it was too late!

I try to post the thread where something has been discussed before. The search function is not always the easiest to use and sometimes the titles people use are misleading along with "hijacked" threads.
