ignition resistor
hey guys, i have what looks like a53 merc motoer in my 48 coupe. there is no resister. do i or do i not need one?? thanks to all who respond.

Dick if it has the Ford coil then yes, it mounts up near the front of the Manifold .is it on volt ?The true test is put a meter on the out put of the coil .

Dick, I think the real answer depends on a number of things. We - or someone - needs to know the voltage and the resistance of the coil (so we'll know if it is internally resisted). Some coils are manufactured with internal resistors and some are not. It pays to do a careful survey of just what you have, first.

Does your 48 coupe have a 12V battery in it?
If so, touch an ohm meter to the two posts on the coil. If it is around 1.5 ohm, that is a coil rated for 6V. You should put a resister before the coil. If you have a coil that reads between 3 and 4 ohms, that will be fine for a car with a 12V battery in it.
