Default 1931 roadster wiper shaft top bow clearance.

My roadster when restored years upon years ago used a homemade front top bow.It is okay and does the job and being attached to a fairly good top I do not want to change it out if at all possible. My question is this were originals and correct replacements made with a clearance area for the wiper shaft? Just looking at mine and a correct (I think) chrome Trico vacuum motor it looks like top bow will interfere with wiper shaft or vice versa. Mayby I am trying to install motor incorrectly but it seems the only way with the clamps I bought that strap around windshield upper tubing. Thank You.

Hello 37 coupe, The top bow on my 31 Roadster has a clearance area where the shaft goes through. Mine was restored/finished in 2002 and new Lebaron Bonney cloth top and frame had the clearance in the bow. Not sure if the original had a clearance or not but someone in the forum will know. Good luck with yours. Dutie

Hallo 37 Coupé, I didn't quite understand your text. But maybe the two pictures will help you?

Yes okay so that is what I thought. Thanks for all the replies but another question on the wiper clamps to window frame should there be a rubber cushion between clamping surfaces?

Most folks refer to the front wooden top support as the header. It makes it easier when doing searches here and on line to have the more common nomenclature.

If you do a search with "header" or even front header for a Model A Ford roadster you usually will get an exhaust part. I have had a '46 Ford convertible and two 1939 Ford convertibles over the years and have bought wood front top bows from places like Brad's wood shop and have never seen the term "front header". Must be another sign I should have stuck with early V8 Fords.

I meant no offence but search strings have to be more descriptive of the nature of the part. "Top front bow" had me scratching my head when I first read post #1 and I wasn't the only one. The front support that attaches to the windshield on most convertibles and even on the old soft top closed cars whether it be wood or metal is generally referred to as a header. All the ones behind it are bows.
