36 rear end in a 34 chassis?
Hey Barners. Got a question- I know the wheelbase for a 34 Ford and a 36 Ford are the same. But will a 36 rear end mount into a 34 chassis? Or are the springs set up different and the torque tube different lengths? Thanks

Different and different. Spring on a 34 is v shaped and closer to the rear end tt and ds on 36 is longer. There are 34 pieces around especially where butchers have been at work.

As noted above, both springs are entirely different. '34 spring is slightly curved when viewed from above. The two ends of spring are farther forward than the center of spring. The '36 spring is straight. The '34 crossmember is also curved to properly hold the curved spring. The straight '36 spring will not fit into the curved '34 crossmember without surgery on the crossmember, or grinding on the spring leaves. There's more! '33-'34 Fords had two different lengths of torque tubes and drive shafts, depending on whether the car was originally equipped with a 4-cylinder or a V8 engine. In addition, major rear end design changed to the '36-style with the 1935 model year. The springs mounted on the rear ends differently, as well as the fact that the surface where the torque tube mounts is now 3/4" farther away from the axle centerline on the '35 through '48 rear ends. This CAN be done, but many things must be considered. Our friend "Charlie ny" just did essentially the same swap on his '32 pick-up that he installed a '40 rear end in (almost same as '36, dimensionally). Maybe we can get Charlie to chime-in here.
