Default Door pockets drooping

I notice that over time door pockets tend to droop, the elastic loosens. Otherwise the door card is fine. Is there a way to restore this?

Yes, you can remove the door panel and remove and replace the old elastic from the backside. It’s somewhat like feeding a new elastic through a waistband. The elastic should be sticking out the back of the cardboard panel and sewn down. This operation does require some skill.

I'm not sure what causes them to droop. People stuffing too much in them or poor quality elastic. I'd make sure I used a top quality elastic and be mindful of what you are putting in them or you will be back here again.

I have the same problem with my drawers. They loose their elasticity over time and they keep dropping down into my pants. If I have my pants off they drop off completely.

The originals had a extension spring which had a much longer life than elastic.
I’ve seen (and had) originals that were still in form albeit material showing wear.

Instead of using elastic upholstery material, use quality bungee cords.

Thanks! That’s just what I needed.

Elastic bands and cords are generally a stretchable form of cloth material and natural or synthetic rubber mixed within some of the material or a cloth covered series of rubber cords or bands. Believe it or not, the type of rubber used for high elasticity is natural latex rubber. Synthetic tends to deteriorate slower but has less elasticity to it.

Deterioration of such materials is pretty much guaranteed. None of them will last a very long time due to this. I'm not a bungee jumper but if I was, I would want to make sure that the bungee was new and not some 2-year old partially deteriorated mess.

Coil springs with a stretchy material cover or embedded inside a sheath of stretchy material would last far longer than elastic band or cord material. A lot of seat back robe cords were made of a flat steel chain inside of a rubber tube and covered with worsted material similar to wind lace but they used coil springs at each end to get the elastic affect.

Both unrestored As I have owned with the original 1931 upholstery had droopy door pockets.

My solution: learn to ignore it..... :-)
