Default Spark Retard positioning during ignition timing

With the engine out of the car, and in the process of performing ignition timing, can someone tell me where the fully retarded positioning lever of the distributor arm should be.

Is the fully retarded positioning with the distributor lever toward the exhaust manifold or away from it?

Without the distributor lever being connected to the steering column connecting rod, I'm not sure where the distributor lever should be in the fully retarded position.

Perhaps my photo will make this more clearer.

Thanking everyone in advance to all who provide me with the answer to this question that I have.

Bottom picture. When you raise the lever, clockwise, in the car the other end also moves clockwise pushing the rod towards the engine and the lever on the dist. toward the manifolds.
