What am I missing in the second image posted by Pickup1931? How does the front of the engine move in the downwards direction with the yolk sitting on the cross member?

The yolk doesn't sit on the cross member, it sits on a spring plate, similar to a leaf on a road spring, Snyders part A-6031, most times they are missing and cause heavy wear to the cross member, they also keep the upper springs in there place.

I wonder how this effects engine vibrations? You'd have to think that if those springs had too much compressed force it would transmit more vibration to the frame.
