Re: water pump question..
There should be a cotter pin and nut that you have to remove first.

Re: water pump question..
Two blade or four blade. Irrelevent as neither is riveted to the pump.. Sit down, let the pump hang between your legs with the blade resting on your thighs, remove the nut, put another nut on and thread it a little, give the nut a "sharp" rap with a hammer (brass would probably be best).
Others may chime in with a different way. Paul in CT |

Re: water pump question..
Well, "pop" is an overstatement. Without the nut the fan/pulley is now being held solely by the taper on the end of the water pump shaft. Machine tapers are like wedges that get stuck in place. And it's sometimes a challenge to get them to pull out.
As was said, try another nut and wind it on by hand. Don't tighten with the wrench at all but leave the nut "loose." Then with the fan blades held back by your legs in a seated position, give the loose nut a sharp "rap" with a small to medium size hammer. Maybe two or three. This should then cause the "pop" as the shaft comes loose from the pulley hub. If you have oxy/acetylene bottles you might try heating the hub a bit to get it to release from the shaft taper. Gentle though and heat the cast area surrounding the shaft only and not the blades. If this isn't working for you then cut the fan off with a hacksaw and resolve yourself to replacing the fan AND water pump shaft with new on your engine. Joe K
