Oversize rear wheel grease seals?
Hello,
I have heard that in the recent past, some vendors were selling oversize rear wheel grease seals. I just bought a pair, and they measure 3.1930" in diameter. I measured the inside of the hub where the seal goes, and it was only 3.1875" in diameter. So the seals are about 0.0055" oversize. Is this actually the way it ought to be? If so, how much oversize were the bad seals? Thanks, Doug

Re: Oversize rear wheel grease seals?
I wiped out a new seal the first time I tried to install one of the wrong oversize seals.

I just installed them and my measurments were the same. Place them in the freezer for 30 minutes and pack the inside with grease so the spring will not come out.

They were like that 20 years ago. Why can't they get it right. Some say we are lucky to be able to get this junk.

I just looked in my seal interchange and it shows A-1175 with 3.194 OD.

Re: Oversize rear wheel grease seals?
If I was given a seal 3.194 diameter, I would belt sand it down to fit. If worried it might channel grease past outside diameter, coat outside diameter with a small amount of silicone. .005 press fit is ridiculous when the snap ring locks the seal in place.

Re: Oversize rear wheel grease seals?
This problem has been around for years. I believe the seals offered are for a different application. A&L recognized the problem a few years ago and came up with ones that fit. I don't know what they did, they may have turned them down. Since then some of the other suppliers may now offer them as well.

Re: Oversize rear wheel grease seals?
My calculations show that if you can cool the seal and heat the hub to get a temperature difference of 130 degrees Celsius ( 234 degrees F), the seal will slide right in. But doing that would be rather difficult...
If will be a few weeks before I have a chance to try. Doug

Re: Oversize rear wheel grease seals?
Got my Brattons seals the other day and bought their seal driver as a precaution. Put them in the freezer for a hour and they went in with the seal driver.
