That's easy. The moral of the story is, if you don't get the response you want, shop around.

Hey rocket1, tell me more about this New Jersey no QQ plate in front thing, that's the first I've heard of it.

It's the Massachusetts RMV. What else do you need to know?

Rule of thumb is that you should get DMV approval on the plate BEFORE doing any restoration work on the plate, no matter what state you are in.

"It's the Massachusetts RMV. What else do you need to know?"

Maybe. But how does that account for the clerk at the RMV branch who approved the plates instantly and could not have been nicer? Also, the clerk at the first branch who gave me the helpful tip was clearly on my side. He didn't like the manager any more than I did.
I remember when e v e r y one at the Mass. RMV was just like Seinfeld's Soup Nazi. The RMV has clearly come a long way since then. Unfortunately, the manager I ran across at the first branch was vintage enough to have been there in the bad old days.

as I understand it your YOM plate # has to be unique so in the day the same # was issued to that person year after year for that car -so only one set will be usable , or is that wrong?

by the way I have been running a QQ (NJ vintage) plate only on the back - and original plate on the front for 2 years now - no cop hassle yet

I searched for QQ plates from NJ which is their Historic plate Prefix, in NYS they are HX prefixed.
Lets see if this "copy" prints.

Antique Auto License Plates

New Jersey (NJ)
Black-on-straw undated Historic
Authorized 1964 and first issued 1965. Aluminum pairs with QQ-A100 serial format. Plate #QQ-B123 was issued in late 1966; #QQ-N379 was issued in early 1979.

Black-on-straw undated Historic (Courtesy)
Registrants with DMV connections could receive special numbers (such as #QQ-T 11, which was issued to a 1911 Model T Ford).
Black-on-straw undated Historic (Reflectorized)
For a few months in 1969-70, the state experimented with a reflectorized background, then returned to the standard non-reflectorized paint.
Buff-on-blue undated Historic
This base appeared in 1979, with numbers continuing from where the old series left off.

Here in Texas, its really easy to use yom plates. The state originally issued two plates, so we still have to use two. Here in Texas, the plates are actually stamped "front" or "rear" even.

Clearly, YOM plates, or, stated more correctly, license plate usage, is based on state law. What would interest me is how much you guys pay in your state for a set of plates? I searched for over a month for a set of DMV clear plates, and eventually had to pay $350 for an unrestored set in fabulous condition. Not cheap, but much cheaper than a 1932 set, for obvious reasons.

I haven't bought any in a couple years, but, I haven't paid over $30 for a set. Here in NY you need both.

I recommend that you buy both plates no matter what state you're in. I bought one plate years ago and when I went to get it registered, it was rejected because the number was in use. It appears that the seller sold me one plate and sold the other plate to someone else. Bob

QQ plates inN.J. have Historic printed on them, the vehicle has to be 25 years or older,in N.J. historic vehicles and motorcycles only require one plate,in the rear naturally.

Aw just put on the YOM plates and see if anyone in law enforcement really cares. I've put the New Jersey QQ plate on the rear and YOM in front. Of course I haven't been on the road with it yet and make no mistake about it I'm not encouraging anyone to break the law. Well maybe a little..........

In Illinois we can run year of manufacture plates. We do not register that plate al all. We are just required to carry the present registration and plates in the vehicle. No they do not have to be visible at all, usually they are under a seat.

Even though Colorado is a two plate state the rule on YOM plates is only one plate has to be used. They do have a hitch in the system, in that if the number and letter combination is used on any other year plate currently in use, they will not approve the plate.

Basically what we do here in Alaska, except that the plate we display on the front is from wherever (since Alaska YOM plates for 28-31 are as scarce as hens teeth). Mine is Texas, others are SD, MN, KS, to name a few.

What it would have cost if I hadn't had the original.

1931 California

Bertha is currently registered in NYS. $62.00, 2year, cost based on weight.
It cost $3.75 to change the registration to the original YOM plate. One year $25.00 flat rate.
