Re: Macungie pa.
hit a very popular flea up in Maine a few weeks back- wasnt there for about 6 yrs.......
almost no vendors! I am guessing some died, some are afraid to attend and some are getting too old. In any case, it will NEVER be the same. so if you get a really great day out. remember it. might be your last........... |

Re: Macungie pa.
I am told Macungie is having trouble with the town. A few years ago the town took some of the best flea market area to hold a BBQ contest during the car show. But none of the food was for sale and could not be given away, just for judges of contest. Parking has become STUPID. Years ago there were several lots that scout troops took donation to park for the day. No need anymore as there aren't that many people coming. BUT they used the closest lot for volunteers to park in but the lot was maybe 1/4 full. Those volunteers could have parked in the flea market are where there were no vendors. Instead geezers with bad hips and knees had to walk from the VFW. The lot that used to be full to capacity with the car corral was MT. Macungie was my favorite show for years but now it's almost dead. Cadillac was the feature this year, looked like a used car lot with 80's and 70's cars.

Re: Macungie pa.
I gave it up this year. I started vending in 97, before which you couldn't get a space. It steadily declined till 19 when I barely made the space rent

Re: Macungie pa.
$9 BUCKS TO GET IN! Contrast that with Jacktown, which charges Nothing, NADA, zilch admission. And parking is free ! They're fighting the crowds off! Auf wiedersehn, Awscht Fest!

Re: Macungie pa.
The car show was very well attended on the Sunday that I was there, so I don't think there's any "new normal" reluctance for people to get out and mingle. In fact, at every car show I've been at this year, most people who I spoke with mentioned how great it was to get together without masks and be normal again. Those who talk about a "new normal" are just giving into despair and creating a self-fulfilling expectation. I suspect that the decline in the swap meet was due to other factors mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

Well, it just does not make sense that no one was there Friday and Saturday for the flea market but they all came Sunday for the show. I don't the flu was the cause. I guess we will see how Hershey happens. Numbers are good from what I hear.

Re: Macungie pa.
So how does that square with the 500+cars and thousands of people who mingled freely among each other without masks at the car show? There are people who have convinced themselves that covid is the end of civilization, and frankly, if they stay in their houses and never come out again with the rest of us, they won't be missed.

Wont't argue with those numbers, but despite that, thousands did show up for the car show. The original question was what happened to the swap meet. Some suggested that it was fear of covid that kept vendors home. I say that doesn't jibe with the attendance and participation at the car show. Is it being suggested that only vendors fall into the category of those fearing covid and they all stayed home because of that, but car exhibitors and spectators fall into the category of those not fearing covid and all came out? I think not. Logically, the reason for the swap meet decline lies elsewhere. Last edited by Will N; 08-22-2021 at 04:07 PM. |
