Default 39 coupe front brake question.

Hi guys. My 39 coupe brake pedal feels like I,m pressing against a brick wall although the vehicle stops,I guess it could be old brake linings so I,m putting on new linings. I,v taken the shoes off and on one side I,v noticed there is no brake shoe anchor plate ( 91a 2030) the other side has one and neither side has one on the back, the brakes appeared to operate o.k ( apart from the pedal situation), what do you think ? Cheers. Jim.

I think it would be a good idea to get some more plates and possibly the cams if they were damaged by the lack of the retainer plate.

Got to have those if you want stopping power. Available here.

Thanks.i of course intend to replace the missing anchor plates,I,m just intrigued as to what they do and how the brakes would have performed without them, when I replaced the wheel cylinders etc when I first got the car I wasn't aware of the situation at the time, the car seemed to stop without anything to make me feel anything was not how it should be .

The shoe pivots at the bottom and the retainer keeps it engaged with the adjusting cam. Without it, the shoe may have shifted allowing the contact patch of the shoe to change, ie, its only contacting the drum at the top. That could explain why pedal effort is up but stopping power is down. I'd also check for leaks and or contamination since the slave cylinder replacement.
