39coupe,replacing rear axle seals
Hi guys .i,m replacing the axle seals due to oil in the brake drums .
I have the axle out with the spring still attached and I have the proper spreader. I have had shipped from C&G the kit required but the axle hasn't been taken apart yet , the question I,m asking is ....I have 2 seals for each side, a front bearing seal 4245, and a grease seal 1175, do bearings need to be removed ,do I replace both seals to cure the oil problem and do the snap rings need replacing ,as I said I haven't taken it apart yet I,m just looking at an exploded diagram,I would prefer to know in advance what to do before I throw myself into it . Many thanks for your help as always , Jim. |

Re: 39coupe,replacing rear axle seals
The small seals go inside the housings--- the first part installed after cleaning, though there are aftermarket seals that can be installed from outside(if they are still available), the hubseals go under the snapping, most times the snap ring is reusable

Re: 39coupe,replacing rear axle seals
The seals in the axle housings are driven out from the wheel side.I think I used a socket and extension. Putting them back in is a little tricky. I welded a washer on a piece of conduit and ground the OD to fit the seals to be installed. I wraped tape on the conduit untill the seal was being held.
The seals in the hub go in hard and i would pull and grease the bearings while I had the chance. Use a piece of wood across the seals to drive them in. Take care of the axle housing gaskets. The are what shim the carrier bearings. They are not random gaskets and need to be put back as removed. If torn, measure and replace with the same thickness. Use the old bolts and do not chase the threads in the center housing. Special threads. |
