Default 1939 Deluxe hood latch/brace

The 39' Deluxe I bought had it's hood de-chromed and filled in. I bought a replacement and now the secondary or safety latch does not have any place to latch. Upon inspection of the old de-chromed hood I discovered why. Is this an add-on or is it bonafide?

Phil

Neither does mine. The piece you have looks like someone tried to install a latch that is operated by a cable (like on later models)

That is the most common correct late style hood T plate in your photo for 1939 Deluxe it goes in the front of the hood. There is also an early style that involves wire rods that capture shark fins on the top grille brace, be glad you don't have that early style.

He said his hood was shaved, thereby possibly eliminating the inner HOOD latching mechanism parts, the plate shown in his photo is up in the front of the HOOD, not the top of the grille. Turn around and look up when the hood is open.

Your photo shows some minor modification at front where the "T" plate would attach to the front of the 1939 Dlx hood, but that is a very hard part to find so correct what has been modified. You will also need a small pedestal that the the front of the "T" plate rests on(very hard to find an original). Find someone with an original 1939 Dlx that you can compare. It also looks like your trip lever might be missing from the hood "T" plate, can't quite tell from the photo. Then move on to the grille to make sure the cross bar is intact so the bent finger of your "T" plate can cam over it. Then you will need the hood safety catch shown in one of the responses. If your hood ornament was removed, they still would have had some type of closure system which may have altered or removed your original closure parts.

cs39ford,

You have the same "tab" as I have and this is where the safety latch hooks on. My new hood doesn't have it and that is why the safety latch is non-functioning. Is your hood original to the car?
I would like to know if any others have this unusual "tab" on their hood brace.

Phil. My hood is the original for my car. Never been changed. I re did this car in 1990. Before that this car was last on the road in 1966. Cliff

I understand the early and late latches.....My hood is the later style. It's the "tab" on the hood brace where the safety (secondary) latch hooks to that Cliff (cs39ford) and I have. Apparently it came from the factory that way.
