Default U joint felt seals.. how do you fit them?

How do you get these felt seals to fit neatly in the groove of the "clam shells" . The new felts looks far too big and loose in their uncompressed state.

The felt seals should be rectangular not square. The narrowest width should fit into the clam shell slots with a little help.

I've cut strips of cork gasket material to lay in the groove to take up some of the space making them fit tighter. I use a little bit of silicone gasket maker to stick the cork into the bottom of the groove and a bit of the same to stick the felt to the cork. This makes for a better compression fit when assembled. I do not use the gasket maker on both sides of the felt so it still has the ability to move/slide as needed while going down the road.

Try soaking the felts in motor oil.

I took the back axle and drive line out of a 29 tudor which had been flooded for a week or so ,halfway up the windshield in fact . The vehicle had been in one family since new and had 76,000 miles on it . It had never been apart I would bet . There was no felt in the clam shell grooves just a tight fitting cork seal . I never have much success with those fluffy felt seals poked prodded greased etc etc etc I tried cork in my 28 phaeton and no leaks (yet !!!)

John in rainswept Suffolk County England .
