You assumed that they were looking at the motor . . . . . you completely over-look the possibility that one of them, probably the car's owner, lost his contact lens, and the other gentlemen are helping him find it.

Or, even more likely - they are just shooting dice !

It looks to me like someone dropped a copy of Esquire on the hood and it fell open to a particularly racy photo.
