6 volt/12 volt jump box

Looking for suggestions for a "reasonably" priced portable jump starter box. I can find boo-koo 12 volt ones but I have electronic ignition. Any help/source/idea appreciated.

A 6 volt OPTIMA Battery is compact enough to be used for jump starts. OPTIMA's hold their charge for a long period of time and have excellent cranking amps - just have to check its charge and recharge it every so often. I carry one in in the trunk of my '34 along with jumper cables all the time. I've bailed out many a grateful car-guy at car events over the years...

I've come to think that carrying the spare Optima is the way to go too, petehoovie. A big consideration is they are nowhere near as messy to be around or handle as a lead-acid. Now that I'm thinking those jump boxes need charge-up way more frequently than an Optima too! Who knows when they stop making them, so I guess I'm ponying up another couple hundred to Amazon soon.

They look like they are primarily an overseas bulk supplier and you probably could not even get a sample unless you were a bulk buyer.

I know they make voltage reduces for people that have gone to 12 volt but kept the 6 volt gauges, electric motors or radios. Is there a way to use a 12 volt jump pack in conjunction with a voltage reducer?

I know you might be kidding.... but You ever tried to start a v8 with a crank? I've done 4 bangers. Maybe I will cut off the battery and try a v8 for fun. I nice hill or a couple of pushers to pop the clutch might be easier.

I had a '48 Seagrave pumper with the Pierce-Arrow derived 468" V12 that I could start with a crank. I won a lot of beers betting guys that I could. That was 20 years ago, though.

I have found that the more cylinders an engine has, the easier it is to start manually. Think about it, 180 degrees of rotation on the crank will get you one firing impulse on a 4 cylinder engine (if you get it properly positioned on the compression stroke). On a 12 cylinder, 180 degrees on the crank will get you 3 impulses. The easiest starting snowmobile I ever had was a 4 cylinder, 2 cycle Yamaha. One good pull would get 8-12 impulses.

Remember my father showing me how to crank and start his former police cruiser '37 Ford.

We all know that a decent running flathead is easy to start with a starter. Well, it is easy to start with a hand crank, too. Long ago, I had a 36 with a bad battery. I also had no money, but I did have a crank. I started it many times with the crank, sometimes in a cold Kansas winter. Really, a hand crank will work quite well.

For those of you that remember Old Henry Craig....................He was at my house with his (I believe) '46 Ford and the battery went bad. He jumped it with a 12V Bolt portable jumper to start it. He said "I need to fool the jumper unit to make it think it's 6V". I dont know what he did but it only took a few seconds. Just saying there is a way.

Whenever I had to use a 12 volt battery to jump start my 6 volt cars I would do so by connecting the ground side to somewhere convenient on the engine block (not the battery) and then momentarily touch the starter side of the solenoid or directly to the starter cable lug on the starter.

You could build a jumper cable with a solenoid on it and a remote starter button.
That way you can jumpstart from any 12v source available directly to the starter.
Using you battery for the ignition (since leadbatteries recover there is usually enough to run ignition after waiting a bit).

Hooked-up the way 51 Merc described passes 12v current ONLY through the starter and to the grounding point. The ONLY place you'll see 12v is the measured differential between the two jumper cables. The radio/lights are essentially in a completely different circuit. The key here is hooking-up to the STARTER side of the solenoid. Same difference as connecting one cable to starter lug, and the other cable to the starter case. You will NOT see 12v anywhere else in the system. DD

Y'all ever thought about the everyday 6v/12v conflict that occurred umpteen times a day way back when? Neighbor's '49 Ford battery (6v) is too weak to crank the old flathead over. Since SHE is so good looking (and a really NICE person, too), I decide to give her a push with my new '55 Chevy (12v). When both bumpers line-up and touch, we now have a COMMON ground between 6v POS ground system and a 12V NEG ground system. Even with this common ground, the fact remains that electrically, you have two separate circuits that have no detrimental effect on each other. DD

Thanks for the help/advice. Gave up on the idea and picked up a 6v/12v charger/maintainer at AutoZone today (Schumaker).
