Help to identify landau irons please
Hi all and a very merry Christmas from Australia. Guys I have a pair of landau irons I bought years ago for a future project. I’m just trying to identify what they actually belong to.
They carry the part number AF&S co 2702A and B Searches so far show for A models close to these numbers but I haven’t found an exact match. They are 21 3/4” between hole centres. Thanks Dan |

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
Guys I can’t seem to upload a photo. The part number above is very similar to some model a landau numbers but I haven’t been able to track down a actual match as yet. But they look identical to model a cabriolet landau irons

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
I assume they are folding. If they are Model A cabriolet the 29-31 fold almost equally in half. The later 31 has a longer lower section.

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
Are they one piece or folding?? Australia only received the Sport Coupe, not the Cabriolet in Model A era, so they are either A or another make entirely. There is a possibility they were an Aust. made part if Model A Sport Coupe tops were done there. Cheers

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
"SOME" Euro's/German Fords had landau bars, though not likely in the same year here is two examples of "possibilities" hence "Pictures".

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
Or perhaps off one of these Australian '32 sport coupes whose landau irons differred from those used on American and Canadian '32 sport coupes (which were part heavy stamping and part forging butt-welded together).

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
All of the Cabriolet bars that I've seen were made by AF&S but I don't think the tube bars for the Sport Coupes were made by them. I'll have to check my manuals for the Sport Coupe stuff. The model A Sport Coupe tubular bars were part painted and with polished stainless center covers so construction was a lot different aside from the fact that they were really just for looks.

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
Thanks guys. As it turns out my irons won’t be suitable for my buddy who is looking for a pair of landau irons for an Aussie 33 coupe. The early 33 coupe is a sports coupe only as they couldn’t fabricate the entire roof yet in steel. So what he needs looks identical to the 32 sports coupe landau irons that actually have a dogleg in them at the bottom. They’re 22&1/4” between the hole centres and are non folding type. I’ll post this in wanted site too

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
If you cannot find something I'm thinking something could be fabricated that might not be exact but aesthetically pleasing and very close. Because they are non folding they just need to be shaped to the design. A little imagination will come up with a fabrication process.

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
The cast aluminum reproduction ones for the Model A cars are relatively inexpensive and could be modified for use on other applications. They could be welded an polished with some success. Purchase a few sets and do some cut, weld, & polish work to get something that would fit. The Ford ones were made from formed steel tubing then painted. The centers were stainless pieces that crimped on if I remember correctly. Cut some from a big chunk of aluminum & polish that. Stainless could also be done but would be higher in difficulty level.

I believe they were plated, not stainless. It's been many moons since we restored a 30 Sporty. It was missing the landau irons but we found a set at a swap meet. I'm sure they were original as they were steel tube with crimped center. I remember we had to be real careful getting the centers off without destroying them so they could be re-plated. |

Re: Help to identify landau irons please
I don't know about Australia but chrome plating of parts here in the US is getting expensive. Aluminum or stainless can be polished. Stainless looks more like nickle when polished but it will stay shiny a lot longer. Steel might be easier to form than stainless but plating adds cost.
Model A Sport Coupe landau bars were all painted originally. They might have plated the center hinge point on the 28/29 but the 30/31 were stainless. They were body color when on a car in 28/29 and black when purchased for a replacement part. All were painted black in 30/31. The 1932 Ford Sport Coupe has bars that are similar to the Australian versions on the 1933 but I don't know if they would fit. Ford USA stopped making Sport Coupes in 1932. It would likely be easier to find some in Australia than here in the US. Last edited by rotorwrench; 12-22-2019 at 07:26 PM. |
