??? how to get junk tire off the rim
OK guys...I have several pretty good rims that have old split, junk tires on them. What are some ideas to cut the tire off and save the rim? I tried just prying it off, but that isn't working.
thanks for your input. |

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
Rather crude, but Chief would pile up loose hay, put the wheels on top & BURNED them off!! Stripped the paint ALSO!

Saws-All, or a Skil saw but don't catch the rim. Once you get a portion the sidewall removed you can pry the steel enforced bead off. Bolt cutters work well at this point. Bob

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
Here is a link to the AA Truck site that I posted some pictures and information on how I removed old tires from my truck rims. They are tires with retainer rings but perhaps it will help.

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
The modern hydraulic/pneumatic thing-a-ma-jigger that takes modern tires off modern rims will tear up your 85 year old rim, don't do it.
Try some ELBOW GREASE and let us know what happens!

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
Not sure exactly what problem you are having , never really had any trouble taking old tires off of wheels, just let my twelve year old dismount a few I had here, he had fun learning cars where much easier to work on than today's cars . I told him don't expect to change a tire on a modern car like this lol!!!!

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
For most tires I can dismount them myself. For dried out hard tires that I can not break the bead I take them to the tire shop. $8 to dismount and $2 for tire disposal and I don't have to worry about disposing of it myself. The local tire stores will not dispose of any tires they did not dismount, so one less hassle later or having to wait for the county to have a free tire disposal day. Rod

I have cut tires off with a grinder a few times. It gets smokey a little but you can cut through the wire easily.

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
"Back in the old days" i would demount tires by over-inflating them until they burst. Seems like a bad idea with car tires though.

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
I use a razor knife and slice through the sidewall and then they come right off. BE CAREFUL though, they don't call them a razor knife for nothing.

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
Don't burn them off as I'm sure the heat will be very bad for spoke tension.
I've used a knife to cut the bulk of the tire off, then the bead can be hammered down with a chisel. Once the bead is down it can easily be peeled off or cut. I've also used a very sharp chisel to cut the bead while it's still in place, after I cut away the bulk of the tire. What I just said isn't good though if you want to save the tube, wich I usually try to do. Harbor Fright sells a tire bead breaker for not too much money. |

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
Like machine girl, I have carefully driven over the tire without touching the wheel. I also have used a jack on the tire and under the pickup at a sturdy spot. For rock hard tires I've used a sawzall but not at the wire bead where a bolt cutter was safer. Nasty job at best..............

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
Soak the bead with some penetrating oil for a few days if its really rusted on. Then use a crow bar and a maul. Careful of your rim, if it gets "scarred" a bit use a die grinder to clean it up.

Re: ??? how to get junk tire off the rim
I use my gasoline powered wood splitter for breaking beads. It does an excellent job.
