Default Snyder's has their high compression heads on sale

I was at Snyders this morning and they had a pallet of 5.5 to 1 and 6 to1 heads on sale. I was told they are seconds that were tested and proven ok. Most had little visual blems but nothing that would affect their performance. I bought a 5.5 to one one that has some tiny voids. I had to look for them to see them. It was only $210. Not sure but I think the 6to1s were $10 dollars more. Seems like a great deal for anyone looking for one. I was so excited I forgot to grab a new catalog while I was there.

Interesting how one man's junk is another mans treasure. I made castings for nearly 30 years. 'Seconds' never went out the door. They went in the remelt bin. To me it reflects on reputation of quality. Those heads will never be visibly labeled as seconds once installed, but people will see them and make assumptions about the overall product quality. I saw one of the reject 6.0:1 ('seconds') on ebay. The ground out surface defect on the top of the head made me wince.

Surface defects would be easy to hide with metal to metal body filler. it will stand the heat required to cure powder coating and the head would never get that hot.

The ones I saw, you had to look real close to see anything. Once installed it would not be noticeable. I painted it when I got home and it looks great. I also buy appliances at scratch and dent when I can if the defect is only visual and small. They operate the same so why not. My car is a driver, not a points car. I'm very happy with it. I didn't mean to start controversy, I was just trying to help people here save some money in these hard times.

Thanks for the heads up on those heads. I would use them but that's the way I am. My car is just a speedster to start with so not a big deal.

I agree with BA. I was there last Saturday and the guy taking care of us had to look very close to show me a blemish. Couldnt believe those were considered seconds. If I would of been in need of a new head I wouldnt have hesitated to buy one either. I did remember to get my catalog . Yours will be in the mail.

I guess I'm the odd man out. I would never set my standards this low, either as a seller or a consumer. 'Just slop on some filler, paint, and sealer' ??? Your vehicle, go for it. Here are some of the defects. The fact that these are being sold at all is not what I would consider a good move for product reputation. The first batch of 6.0:1's had wrong-height stud pads, now this stuff is being unloaded from the latest batch of 5.5 and 6.0's.

I sure wouldn't want the cracked one, I would consider that more than a blemish. Minor blemishes wouldn't really be a problem to hide. The price should be less for blems than what they are offering. It may well not be worth the risk unless you could go and pick the head in person.

At $275 Snyders price for an unblemished head and the eBay seller with a reserve of $275 is it really worth considering for $20. Caveat Emptor

Thanks for posting the pictures, Mike. Wow!

I'll stick with my low compression stock head, thanks.

I would be worried about the cracks in the first photo where the crack migrates from the water passage to the exterior. That seems to more of a problem vs. a cosmetic blemish.

A friend of mine bought a car and the head looked great. It was not a snyder head, but after a few miles the paint and puddy came out of the crack along with the water. Beware of cracked heads called 2nds. JB
