Default 47 Tonner pickup Tranny 4speed

Hello.
i am restoring a 47 Tonner with a 4speed transmission. There is a keyway/slot ? toward the bottom of the shifter. Can anyone shed any light on the part i think goes into that slot?
Thanks.

That slot holds the shift lever in place. It is supposed to slide into a 1/4" pin, that sits in a hole in the threaded portion of the shift tower...right side I think. Many times they are worn out, the pin is loose and can easily fall into the tranny when removing the shift lever.

The slot in the lever should be nice and square, and the pin should fit snug in both the lever and the hole in the cover. It can be fixed, but make sure the pin did not fall into the trans.

I'm an expert at losing that pin down there... twice, and recovered both times. You need to put on your rubber glove and do some searching. If it isn't laying near the plug then it's likely in the valley between two gears ready to mesh. We'd love to see some pics of your project.

Guys,
so there is a round pin (7221)at the very bottom, is that the ONLY fastener connecting the shifter lever to the tranny? And do i understand you to be saying that the grove in my photo (up about 10") fits into a slot that might be worn to the point that it could break off & slip down into the tranny?
Thank you!

No, they don't wear out and slip into the tranny. This little steel dowel would have to turn 90 degrees to do that. When new, they are a snug fit. It's really just and indexing fixture so the can always clocks the same way. The whole shifter cane assembly is held to the tranny's lid with a fine threaded stamped steel hat looking thing.

You should be able to just buy a piece of round stock at the hardware or auto parts store or in those pull out trays? Better yet, a 9/32 drill bit, cut a piece off the back end of it. There's your oversized hardened steel pin.

Sometimes I feel like a broken record on this issue. Please don’t use a hardened pin or drill stock for this part. You want the cheapest and easiest to replace part to be the pin……not the shifter lever or the shifter housing. If the $2.00 pin starts to wear, it’s a piece of cake to check it out and to replace it. Not so much for the lever or the shifter housing. Pick your poison and do what you’d like to do. Nice good housings and levers are not crowding the shelves at our shop.
