31 Model A rear end
Question, when replacing the gaskets on the axel housings after setting the gearing up what’s the best gasket sealing to use?
Thanks |

Re: 31 Model A rear end
I have never used a sealer on the banjo gaskets or the banjo bolts and never ever any leaks over 30 plus years . I oil the gaskets with a very light oil prior to fitting and removing refitting etc etc to set the ring gear mesh and preload .Be aware the banjo bolts are a precision item they are a machine fit in the trumpet ends and should not need sealer but maybe a dab of LOCTITE SI 5926 would do no harm up to you . I do have a car with one or two bolts with the trace of a weep, axle done years ago . Other posters might do it differently but this works for me .

Re: 31 Model A rear end
Light coat of spray Permatex 80065 on both gasket & surfaces. This more a contact cement than sealant.
SOME sort of RTV on the bolts. And yes. High class fit bolts only. Joe K

Re: 31 Model A rear end
Some folks still use Indian Head Shellac. Some just put a bit of grease on them. In any case, a person doesn't want to add any thickness to it if the carrier preload is good.

Below are a few pictures showing how the axle housing gasket surfaces should be repaired. Use a file on the differential housing to remove the 'proud areas' around each bolt hole, and then follow-up with a hand countersink to clean the perimeter. Don't forget to check run-out in the entire housing itself to ensure the hubs will be in-line with the centerline of the rear end assy. . |

Re: 31 Model A rear end
After cleaning any burrs around the edges I use this stuff. It fills the voids and does not add to thickness. Looking at the web site I see it can't be sold in several states; This item has been restricted from sale in the following states: CA, CT, DE, IL, MA, MI, OH, and RI.
