Default Water Level

The car holds three gallon of water. How much should I put in so it stops sending it out the overflow?

One thing I've heard in response to this question previously is to allow the car to "find its level." Each car will be different in terms of the state of its radiator, the velocity of flow, etc., so there's no one right answer. But if you just drive the car normally and allow the overflow to occur, eventually the water volume will drop to a point where it stays in the cooling system, and then that's your level.

Just cover the fins, below the overflow tube. These monsters really don't take 3 gals, its bit less.

When checking level, as in modern cars, the level is different depending on if the coolant is cold or if it is hot due to expansion when hot.

My 28 has the original radiator, and I put in about 2 1/2 gallons. One and a half gallons of antifreeze and a gallon of water. That way if I need to add some water it will still be at least 50% antifreeze.
