Re: Oval Speedometer/Odometer Question
I have repaired a lot of them with this gear moving on the shaft.

Re: Oval Speedometer/Odometer Question
What kills most odometers is the green grease that Stewart Warner put in there 90 years ago has turned to stone, the little pot metal gears aren't strong enough to drive 5 rows of odometer wheel through this , usually stripping them, or else making the driving gear spin on its shaft. All preventable by servicing the unit.

Re: Oval Speedometer/Odometer Question
Following several printed/AV references, I cleaned and lubricated the S/W
oval unit in my '29 Coupe. A lot of dried grease and "stuff".! Slow and careful not to damage the delicate spring.. re-assembled and test drove with satisfactory results. I think for a total rebuild I would consult one of the pros.! kb |

Re: Oval Speedometer/Odometer Question
About 5-10% of units I restore have magnets that need to be charged. I have a F. W. Stewart magnet recharger, basically a big adjustable electro magnet used to increase the strength of the magnet. Sometimes it is too much and I have to draw some of magnetism out by spinning magnet within a magnetic field. It is easier to do if you have a speedometer calibrator to check it out on. Keep the polarity right, if charged backwards it will work for awhile, but it will go dead as it will try to revert to its original state.
