1941 ford pickup heater
Looking for information on mounting / drilling the holes in the correct location.
1941 ford pickup. I have the correct truck heater which is a little different then the car ( identified by the drain plug) Truck is a factory 6 CYLINDER and not a V8. All the V8 trucks show the heater in the center of the firewall. But i dont think that will work with the 6 cylinder. |

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
The distance between the water inlet oulet is narrower by over 1" then the 6 cyl head and the overall height of the 6 cyl motor would place the heater a lot higher on the firewall then a V8 truck
Placing it over on the passanger would give it plenty of room because the battery is on the left. Trying to make it as close as possible as what it would have been new. Trucks seem to be built with no heaters then the dealer installed if the customer wanted one? Truck is a 1941 ford half ton 6 cylinder with column shift transmission . Another feature that is pretty scarce is the ford script sliding rear window |

I used to do a lot with these heaters a few years back. I never was involved with the installation into a 6 cyl 1941 truck. The V8 installation puts the heater on the passenger side and it straddles the step in the firewall. Check out the Howard Towne book Two Great Trucks where he has included a photo of the 1941 truck ( I assume it is a V8) heater installation inside the cab. I may have a partial install kit from Ford for your 6 cyl heater, I will look for it........good luck 40larry |

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
I was wonder about the off set in the firewall . Which makes sense with the heater core tube to the right side is longer. One heater has on longer stud and a spacer. The shorter studs dont appear to be cut off.
The one piece to work around is the starter solonoid thats on the right side in the same general location as a V8 butnthe battery is on the left and cable runs over the bellhousing. The 4 cyl runs the cable from the solonoid to the starter the same way . The 4 cyl starter is on the left |

I dug around the parts pile and found a 46 truck firewall that has donated some patch panels. It still had enough left of the area a heater had been but was mounted a little off. The heater i have fits it . Going to adust some holes then make a template off it. The other issue of mounting it is, the 6 cylinder pickup has the choke, throttle and vacuum hose for the wipers all in the same location with the starter solonoid below it to work around. Not much room for error or messing up the paint or the firewall pad. Last edited by skidmarks; 01-03-2021 at 04:36 PM. |

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
Another couple questions:
Correct color and the correct strips if original. The 2 heaters shown. The one with the strips looks greenish grey and the strips look orange. This one also has a rod to switch the defrost ducts open or closed. The other which i think is later up to 1947 shows no color just surface rust. No strips and a cable operated for the defrost ducts. Both mount the same and are identified truck by the drain plug in the heater core. |

Ford used same colors and stripe pattern on heaters in the truck as that of the passenger car. All the 1941 heaters used a short rod to pull the defrost control flapper valve. |

Cool thank you. The other cable operated one is probably a 1942 to 1947. As for getting the correct color paint, is there a code or a spraybomb that will work? |

Good luck finding an off the shelf spray can color to match the originals. If you have an old 1941 heater to provide good samples you can have your auto paint supply dealer match them and put them into a spray can. 40larry |

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
Got the heater mounted. The added obstacles.to that area on the firewall are the choke, throttle and vacuum lines along with the higher mounted starter solonoid. Had a parts firewall that worked as a mockup then made a paper template to transfer the 5 holes for the heater.
Next question, were does the switch mount? I have seen 40 pickups mounted like 39 and 40 cars with it up under the dash pointing down. 42 to 47 trucks.i have see with a seperate bracket mounted under the dash. |

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
This picture shows the heater in a big truck. The switch doesnt appear to be visible. I am guess its in the bottom flange of the dash between the column drop and the drivers door? I had a 39 deluxe car that was mounted that way that assume was right for the car.

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
I will when i get the heater installed. Waiting on a new firewall insulation pad. Just recieved the complete new wiring harness from Olson. His wiring harnesses are top notch. Had fuses and turn signals included in the factory style harness.

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
You can see it clear in this picture of a 1940
Is the 1940 truck heater the same as a car? |

No. The 1940 truck heater has a drain fitting threaded into the lower tank and a hole in the outer sheet metal for it. The layout of the two water tubes and mounting bolts on the back side is much different from the passenger car heater. The truck heater looks identical from the front. |

Re: 1941 ford pickup heater
Are either correct for the truck? I think the fancy one is like the one i had in a 41 car and the "more square" is truck or truck only?
The defroster nob on my heater, from what i found is supposed to be a 39 40 because its just a plain nob were the replacement one available should be larger with DEF on it |
