Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
I'm almost ready to drop the old truck on of his stands after 9 months. I'm greasing the center bolt area with the mounted grease fitting. Mike was kind enough to make new one for me. In front the grease goes in. Dumb Q: keep pumping until the grease squirts out where? This is a NOS spring set from Mr. Carpenter.
On the rear fitting the grease does not past the hollow connector piece. |

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
Grease clogs the passages, use spring lube, its thin like automatic transmission fluid--- originally about 75% ice machine oil, rest talc with a dash of ground asbestos

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
Shouldn't be putting grease between spring leaves. Ford had special spring lube for this. You can use something like slipplate.

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
I have an old spring greasing pry bar that is for twisting the spring to get the grease to flow between the leaves. Not sure where I got it or why! Maybe came with a collection of STUFF I bought or was given. It is with my collection of odd or special tools hanging on the wall.. JM2CW !! kerk

Nearly impossible to lubricate a NOS spring without taking it apart and cleaning 80 year old grease out of the lubrication grooves that each leaf has.

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
I have had nos springs apart that were set up for spring lube---no grease inside
I had a 46 that the springs were greased---rode bad had a 39 that always had spring lube---rode very well spring lube is very thin oil---and talc, the talc is a polishing agent and dry lubricant----its in slip plate products The service bulletins in 36 told about the new method, that a dedicated grease gun is to be used, that spring lube was to be shaken before used if grease has been used it fills the passage formed in the top of the spring leaf get filled near the centerbolt then coming out near the center not flowing to the tips of the leaves----once there is grease it blocks the passages from gravity flow to the tips where the lube is needed The original formula is ---77-1/2% ice machine oil, 20% talc, 2-1/2 % pulverized asbestos -------so today we can use auto trans fluid, talc and graphite |

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
Not that I am aware of, but you can always load your own grease gun. I think it is easier to coat each leaf before assembling the spring. It should last a long time. Some time back I saw a formula for a spring lubricant, but not sure when. It included a talc component if I remember correctly.

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
Food for thought, a friend showed me this tool, found one on eBay.
I need to disassemble the springs on my 35 for a full spring restoration, but will try this tool to keep it lubed.

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
And it does say "soft graphite lubricant" in the text. Too bad they use the term "grease" which will probably mislead a lot of people.

There has been enough discussion since it was written 104 years ago I’m hopeful folks will figure it out

Re: Greasing a front spring on a 39 pickup
there should be 3 fittings--one on each side of the covers, and one in the center bolt----use lubricating gun filled with spring lube
