Default Steering gear help appreciated!!

Hi everyone'

I've been lurking and searching for a while with poor results.

I'm currently restoring '31 two door sedan for a friend.

I have a new steering worm gear and sector gear and needle bearing housing from Berts.

I'm having a heck of a time adjusting this thing.
I understand it can be a long and tedious process.

Is there any place online that I can find detailed information about this process

Thank You.

Detailed repair and adjustment procedures are in the Model a Service Bulletins. Is it a 2 tooth or 7 tooth ?? You can also do a search on this site. Type in 2 tooth or 7 tooth depending what you have...

Thanks for the response. It's a two tooth box (should have mentioned that).

Are the service bulletins available on line somewhere? I've searched to no avail.

Are there any other recomendations or advice?

Thanks.

Diablo A's DVD of a tech session gives a nice step-by-step for guys that have a hard time reading the directions. (That's not a put-down. I usually put things together a couple times before I consult the manual and then get it right).
You can usually find video how-tos on eBay. Or, email them at www.diabloas.com.

Les Andrews book is an invaluable source of detailed information onnhow to do stuff. I have used it many times for varios things. You can get one from most any of the Model A parts suppliers.

MODEL A MECHANICS HANDBOOK - VOL. 1For Year(s): 28-31

This is an excellent book covering instruction for maintenance, disassembly, repair and installation of the mechanical components. Step by step instructions are given for each process. 500 illustrations. Over 400 pages. By Les Andrews.

Good luck,
George

OneOwner,

The book (Service Bulletins) is available from many of the model a parts suppliers (i.e. Mac's, Snyders, Bratton's, etc.) The procedures for a 2 tooth are very involved and must be followed in sequence. Also, as you set up the box, the next adjustment will/could affect the previous adjustment so double check each step a couple times if necessary. If the box is on the bench, it will be alot easier than if the box is in the car. This sounds pretty complicated but once you get into it, its not bad. DO NOT use grease for lubricant, use a thick heavy oil such as 600W or 140W w/a little STP mixed in. I use Penrite Steering Box Lube that I get from Calif. No leaks !!!!
