The biggest question would be where you get your pumps from.

I'm using speedway, but a lot of folks on the barn promote Skip, a rebuilder. I think if you are doing to the trouble I would replace both pumps (which it sounds like you are doing). The only real issue with removing the pumps is the bolt on the inside.

Water pumps are like headlights. When one fails, the other will be close behind. As said above, you will find a hidden bolt inside the inlet. Use a six point socket to remove it so the head isn't rounded. We replace those with a stainless steel bolt. Most good hardware stores have them, so you won't have to order. Skip's new turbine style pumps are a good choice for a new pair.

If you have a 14mm six sided socket and it goes onto the hidden bolt (may require a little tapping on) it is a slightly tighter fit than a standard 9/16". Might be worth trying first.

Mart.

Remember, upon assembly Antiseize compound is your friend. And don't over
tighten the bolts. 30 foot pounds works nicely. 51 Mercury manual says to use 28 foot pounds.

I used Bob Drake's. redesigned for better flow. Better impeller, and a reasonable price.

Got my water pumps from C&G. They are the new high flow design with the airfoil centrifugal impeller and ball bearings. Have worked well for me for years.

GLMKE, I could not agree more with what Bob (supereal) has to say here.

I would not go with anything but a Skip (George Haney) rebuild. Those pumps form China scare me. I say "do it once, do it correctly".
George is reasonable, does great work and is quick to boot.

Another vote for Skip Haney rebuilt water pumps. I like having original part numbered cores rebuilt for use on my cars. Have had five sets done by Skip and no problems. If I did have a problem, I know Skip will stand behind his work and make it right. My second choice, if for some reason I could not get them done by Skip, would be Fryer's Early Ford Water Pumps. All of the other new pumps being sold today, by the well known suppliers, are coming out of China. Some report they are holding up well for them, but I will stick with pumps made or rebuilt in the USA.

Keep in mind that Skip does not recommend using his pumps with thermostats. So, if you're going to use thermostats, better get the other pumps. Here's "the rest of the story" on that subject: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106054

I have 3 sets of Skips pumps, 2 sets on 8BA's and 1 set on a 59A and they do what they are supposed to do. Good quality and long lasting.

Just my opinion but Skips pumps have a real turbine type impeller rather than paddles that are just at an angle . Skips pumps don't create air bubbles like the paddle type pumps do. Yes I Have a set of Skips pumps and I have 170 stats and it NEVER overheats. My pumps have over 30,000 mi on them with no issues. If I need service Skip will be there and in a very timely manner, those off shore pumps will be yours to fix or replace. We need to support our usa small businessman when possible. I'm sure some will disagree with me but this is just my opinoin.
regards, Don

I have Speedway pumps on two shoeboxes. One set 14 years and one set 12 years. They are fine for me.
