12 volt

Switched my '47 to 12volt. Installed voltage drops on gauges put on 12volt alternator, changed coil and all bulbs everything seems to work fine. What can I do to the heater fan motor to make it work? I guess I'll have to install modern radio too.

Change out the motor a 12v. Their are 2 speed motors. The radio draws too many amps to use a step-up transformer. You'll have to add a modern radio. Remember the old radios were mostly AM.

Can't you get AM 600 from Conyers? That looks to be a pretty good old time radio station.

Wouldn't need a step-up transformer. Would need a step-down transformer aka voltage reducer. I don't know how many amps the radio draws but here's a 6 amp one from Mac's that might do. http://macsautoparts.com/early-v8-fo...0R3CHL1142723/

Do you know how many amps the heater fan motor draws, maybe I can use this votage reducer.

there is a voltage reducer (resistor) available at napa or carquest that will work on your 6 volt heater. pm me if you need the part number, i have it somewhere.

I would use a 12V fan motor for the heater just for the increased air speed. More speed, more heat and defrost.

Tom, What Did You Do To The Starter?

If you get a .5 ohms resister TWO and put is parrell you can tap off one side for radio and other for heater.Under $40 epay 310404197153
What the voltages does is split 6 and 6 volts. They are 100 watts and about 6" long.

3340 you don't need to change the starter it will work fine on 12 volt. It cranks so much faster so the engine starts quicker, you really don't have the starter engaged very long at all. Now if for some reason you have to crank the starter for a longer period the starter would probably get warm.

I second this starter info! I put 12V in my '30 roadster about 10 yrs ago. Used the original cleaned up A starter...(NOT rebuilt). Still going strong after all these years..Ford quality,eh

My neighbor did nothing to his heater fan motor in his '47 when he switched to 12 volt. Get's a lot more air. So far motor is doing fine.

You could try it. The worse that can happen is you end up replacing the motor. But later instead of now.

I bought a Ron Francis solid state voltage reducer from Summit.It will handle 15 amps and will handle most of your 6 volt needs.It does not need to be matched to the current draw,it is a voltage reg.and can handle varying loads and continue to put out 6volts.Cost about $80.Phil

you can have your original radio converted over to 12v by good radio restorer. I believe it is pretty expensive though. they sell voltage drops for heater fan motor almost anywhere. I would recommend the 12v conversion book by randy rundle out of fifth avenue antique auto parts in KS. 27 pages full of info and easy to understand. I converted my 47 before I bought this book and did fine but it is cheap about 10.00 and a good reference. I would prorbably leave my original radio in the dash and put a modern one in the glove box or something hidden. my car used original generator conv. to 12v coils and original 6v starter . everything worked fine and lights were much brighter for night driving. bright lights were the biggest thing for me as well as starting much easier in cold weather. I live in the country where there are no street lights. just my 2cents.

If you get a 12 volt heater motor, make sure it turns in the right direction. Some go clockwise and some counter clockwise.

I'd like to hear more about the radio. Someone on here posted awhile back that the old radio can work, as-is, IF it still has its old-style vibrator. Is that correct? Can anyone confirm or contest this ???

What you may be remembering is that the old radio will work with negative ground (not 12 volt) if you replace the old vibrator with a new one that is not polararity sensitive. That's as close as I remember anything related to that.
