Default Growling noise when clutch is engaged

I took my car on a 100 mile drive. It ran great. The next time I tried to move it, I had issues.

When I press the clutch pedal, there is a loud growling noise. There is also a huge load on the engine and I can tell that the RPM is dropping and it's going to die. I release the clutch and everything is normal.

Sounds like a frozen throw out bearing. I swapped the throw out and pilot bearings. Neither looked bad.

It still does the same thing.

I check end play on the crankshaft and its minimal.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Maybe to much crank end play and the flywheel or starter ring gear is being
pushed into a long starter bolt or the flywheel housing.

Bob
I was thinking maybe the same thing. How much end play is too much?

According to the Service Bulletins should be .004" to .007"

I read that .012 is the max.

Get someone to hold the clutch pedal down, and then hand crank it slowly

1. If the dowel pin retainer plate is missing then standard length flywheel bolts might hit the main bearing cap.

2. "Same same" problem if bolts are too long.

The noise started suddenly and only happens when the clutch pedal is pushed. It ran for years without an issue.

I removed the spark plugs and had my son slowly hand crank. It looks like the outer part of the throw out bearing is hitting the fingers on the pressure plate. The housing part of the throw out bearing then starts spinning on the hub. When I had the clutch apart, I inspected those fingers and didn’t see anything weird or any grooves. Can I adjust the pressure plate to move those fingers out?

Yes Slow process if in vehicle but can be done. 5/8 inch below the top of of the pressure plate collar, each finger. Is your clutch pedal adjusted correctly?

I just read that in Les Andrews book. That’s easier than removing the transmission. I’ll report back when I’m done adjusting.

Might not have enough Free play allowing the
throw out bearing to back away from the arms of the clutch pressure plate to the bearing!

Bob
That turned out to be the problem. I guess after my last 100 mile drive, my crankshaft endplay increased. I had one long starter bolt and it was hitting the flywheel. I guess that after swapping out the TO bearing, I put the long bolt back in the same place. I measured the end play today, .030. Too much. It still runs fine and no growling noise.

I’ll start a new thread on fixing the crankshaft end play.

The pressure plate was way out of adjustment as well, at least I have another thing corrected.

Thanks for everybody’s help.
