Default Gas Pump

This is not Ford related but I'm sure someone can help. I'm restoring two gas pumps that are porcelain coated. The porcelain is in bad condition chipped, scratched and dented. Can the porcelain be sandblasted off without damaging the metal (warping)? Has anyone had any experience doing this? What other options might I have? Thanks.

Depending what make & model gas pump it is, they make re-pop porcelain price\gallon face's, check www.vics66.com they have all kinds of parts, but some pumps are so rare that nobody will have them. I have restored a few myself, got most parts from Vics. Or check ebay. I just finished this Wayne 60, its FUN!

I would like to see pictures of members gas pumps, restored, unrestored etc. It may not be directly Ford related but I think most of us consider this part of the restoration of all old cars.

sandblasting will warp the panels, the porcelon is too hard to come off real easy, depending on the extent of damage, replace like others have said or fill with body filler and sand down level and paint, if you sand the porcelein paint will stick to it

Here is my Tokheim 300 in my home office. I bought two, one to restore and one for parts. I cut one of the extra doors as you can see and put in glass shelves for the models. The other side of the pump is original. I bought most of my parts through Gass Pump Heaven.

Here is a photo of our Sinclair Gas & Oil. My Grandfather had a Sinclair "Fillin Station" in North Georgia from the late '30's to the early 60's. I agree that the gas pumps, etc, go with Hot Rods and Antique Cars. We also have two working Coke machines, a '42 chest style and a '57 Vendo-81.

This is my "pre-war-evolved-into-the-50s" country Texaco station. Pumps are '38-'40 Tokheim tall 39s. I have one more 39 back in the corner that will be a Ford Benzol someday.

Years ago there was a company in the Houston area that dedid porcelain. A friend of mine had some chips on an oven door repaired and it came out very nice. Porcelain sin/tub repair kits are commonly available. Try the tub restoration people in your area and someone can probably help you with the porcelain.

What about someplace like Redi-Strip?

Beautiful pumps everyone! The best I can do is my Sinclair gas globe here at my desk that I wired to light up.

I have a rare combination Air/Water dispenser, that is available. It is just like the head in the Cecil/WV post. The water dispensers were only used in the south, because of freezing weather in the north. I would take $1,000.00 for it, but it would have to be picked up. It is in good unrestored condition.

Scott I am in the process of restoring 2 pumps, wanted to paint them base coat clear coat but I now have a lead on getting at least one of them re-porcenalized. They are originally porcelain...white.

I highly recommend oldgas.com for those gas pump and petroliana enthusiasts. Here are some of my visible gas pumps. The Sunset pumps and the Violet Ray are Wayne (Boyle Dayton) cut 83s. The Seaside pump is a Keesee. All these were made in Los Angeles.

I have only actually restored one of my pumps the Wayne 60, after sandblasting, and hand sanding, I sprayed gray heavy fill poly primer, sanded that with 800, then used Acrylic Enamel with hardener, it is a single stage paint that dries very fast and looks great! Not very good for cars these days because it will fade in sunlight and chip, but for a gas pump it is fine, and cheap too! Buy the decals & 15" metal body globe from www.slamagas.com $25 each for decals.
