Default tailpipe

A friend of mine and another fellow just finished restoring a '31 station wagon and it is beautiful.

I could not help but notice that the tailpipe is placed in the center of the car. The JS shows this set up but I am curious as to why it is done. Is it supposed to help keep the exhaust fumes from getting back into the rear of the car? Why not just extend the original setup.? Just wondering as it certainly does look different.

It was to keep the fumes from getting into the seating compartment. I think the idea was to get the exhaust gas away from the wheel area that might create an updraft that would get the fumes in the rear, which has a seat all the way at the back and might be able to smell the exhaust. The other factor is cost. They created a simple extension that was added to a standard exhaust pipe which would be easy to add with out changing the whole exhaust pipe.
