1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
Just had a new clutch installed in my 1930 Model A Roadster convertible. I can no longer shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd when double clutching. never had this problem before new clutch. Mechanic says that clutch DOES disengage and has adjusted the clutch linkage. Any thoughts? Thanks you! Drue Bates - Arizona

Re: 1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
I would start by making sure the transmission is full of oil. That's how they act when they are empty.
I'm assuming it acts normal from a stop. As in you can put it in gear at idle and take off fine? Sent from my E6810 using Tapatalk |

Re: 1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
If the gearbox is not properly supported in the time between the spline on the input shaft engaging the clutch plate and getting a few bolts in the bell housing, the clutch plate may be bent. If that has happened, it will drag when the pedal is depressed. That might be your problem. The only fix it to replace the bent clutch plate and don't do it again.

Did they pull the engine to change the clutch ? If so they may have bent the throttle linkage ! If your idle speed is to high you'll grind gears.

As has already been said. Make sure there is oil, the proper amount of oil, in the transmission. Also make sure the correct oil is used! A lot of people won't buy the correct 600W oil and complain about just what you describe. 600W is much different than regular gear oil you can buy off the shelf, it really does make a huge difference.

Re: 1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
Why has nobody asked the obvious question, was the pressure plate adjust properly, and is there the correct pedal free play?

Re: 1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
Pedal free play and engine idle speed are two places I would look, too. There is a guy in our club who has his idle set to "excessively fast" and is always grinding the gears, even when at a full stop to put it into first gear. I keep telling him is idle is too fast, and he says "nah I just need a new transmission." Sure, that should fix the problem....not.

Why was the clutch replaced ?
Are you now able to shift from neutral into any gear without grinding ? How much pedal free-play is there ? Were the pressure plate fingers checked/adjusted prior to or upon installation ? You really shouldn't have to double clutch upshifts. |

Re: 1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
Easy stuff first. Check for the correct transmission oil. Make sure your idle is set properly. It is a big deal to tear into the pressure plate and disk again.

Put the car in neutral with the clutch out and rev the engine. Then push the pedal down to the floor and wait about 20 sec. It should go into gear with no grinding. If not, adjust the clutch.

Re: 1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
I`m going with Edzaha. on the pressure plate adjustment. I replaced a clutch last month. the pressure plate was a rebuilt. I always bolt them up and check for the right finger height, and they were way off. by a 1/2" that is a lot. if the fingers are to low the clutch might not disengage. I will add the flywheel was resurfaced correctly. if you have the flywheel resurfaced it has to be done correctly, if not it will effect the adjustment of the pressure plate.

Re: 1930 Model A Gears Grind After New Clutch Install
That's where my brain goes with anything that has a mechanical linkage to the clutch or hydraulic for that matter. I'd start here and the throttle as mentioned.
