Head stud holes into block water jacket?
Folks - Newbie (to the forum) here with a question. I pulled the cylinder head on my '30 pickup and the studs appeared to be old, if not original. In the process of installing new ones I chased the block threads with a tap. I found several of the holes went all the way through into the water jacket. Is this right? I suppose there's nothing inherently bad, I was just expecting blind holes. Last Model A engine I rebuilt was in the late '60s and frankly I don't recall one way or the other.
BTW, 76K miles on the clock, standard diameter pistons, compression high 60s psi. Wow. On the other hand, I haven't looked at the bottom end yet... Thanks in advance. JayJay |

Yes, some tapped holes do enter the water jacket, I coat them with hard setting Permatex and a small amount in the threaded hole.

Through holes are known as wet holes and i agree that they must be coated with a sealer and Permatex #2 is the preferred stuff. So map them out and seal them so they won't seep coolant up through the head.

Same is true on a few oil pan bolts, also a couple on the water pump.
