Default Generator

While driving around town the other day, the car stopped running. A couple of gallons of gas fixed things, so I need to respect what the gas gauge is saying! But, an electrical problem has come up. The gen is hot after running a short time and doesn't show charging on the ammeter. I checked the ammeter and cutout and put on my spare gen. It has the ammeter needle zooming past the end of the scale if I rev it. The battery is 18 months old, plates are covered with water, and it spins the motor well, so it seems OK. The 3rd brush is pushed all the way up.

Any ideas?

Check for short to ground inside the junction box and toward the battery.

Bruce, sounds like a short to me, like I had a few months ago.

If the ammeter is showing + charging, I would clean the battery terminals, grounds, starter terminal, if the generator isn't connected to the battery the generator can and will make 40 volts. If the battery is shorted internally same thing can happen.
