Default under tank gas valve leaking

New valve, 29-early 31 style. Leaking thru to the carb. when shut off. Suggestions? Is there a spring in there to make the valve seal, it seems to turn very easy.

I’m not sure if yours is constructed the same, mine was a brass on brass seal. Basically like a ball valve. There is a spring in there that keeps tension on the two parts that is important as well as the correct amount of tension. I went in and polished the stationary part and the moving part attached to the handle. You can even use some sort of compound to lap the two pieces together to make a real nice machined surface between the two. I ended up using just some aggressive metal polish for the lapping. I suppose a purpose made lapping compound would work better, however I achieved a real nice working product at the end.

It’s sounds like the spring inside may be broken or collapsed for some reason.

Rust in the tank can score the valve faces so if you take it out go ahead and install the filter screen in it.

JFranklin, you mean in the tank? How would one go about that? I don't have issues now but who knows what the future may bring!

It's a cigarette shaped filter that fits tightly into the feed opening of your gas valve, when you take it out of the bottom of your tank. Screw valve & new filter back in tank, I use a sealant on the threads, AND I put a dab of epoxy on the filter & valve, just in case it came loose somehow.

This kit will fix it.

It comes with a small amount of grease that won't dissolve in fuel. The small amount is all you will need. The grease fills the small scratches/irregularities in the surface of the taper and seals it up. I did this on mine a few years and 50,000 miles ago and it's still good. The nice part is how cheap the fix is.

I've been through two reproduction fuel valves and both leaked - returned under warranty. I haven't installed the third one yet, though the rebuild kit sounds appealing.
