Original colors of my V8's? Help for restoration please
Hi all,
My name is Martin, Im from Argentina, and I have 2 Fords V8 that were from my dad. I want to restore them and I'm looking to find out the original color combination of them. Is there a database where I can search? I owe 1935 Ford 5-window Coupe, painted in some cream color, with red wheels and brown interior 1940 Ford De luxe convertible, painted in Maroon (not sure if its Mandarin, or garnet, etc). Interior is light brown leather. The soft top is missing so I'm looking for the canvas, which I dont know where to buy, what color and what dimension (lenght). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you and best regards |

There are paint chip booklets available from most of the EV8 peddlers which have formulas.

One must be very careful with the paint charts as they more often than not, include Mercury colors, commercial colors, etc. The old Ditzler book was one perfect example. there were lawsuits over that book as they had stated certain colors were correct for certain models. Can you imagine painting your '40 convertible bright red and getting your a-- handed to you on the concourse?

The Early Ford V8 Club of America sells restoration books that cover the years you are interested in. I would highly suggest you purchase each for information about paint colors but also many more things. Go to their website and you can buy them online, I don't believe you have to be a member to do this.
Good luck. |

Martin, welcome to the Ford Barn, you can look into the trunk area or under the car to find some original color. I was able to pull some of my interior out to find the original color which is very close to the current repaint.
The picture above is from two different cameras the first three pictures are closer to the color of the car. Last edited by corvette8n; 10-31-2021 at 08:19 AM. Reason: Added picture |

Re: Original colors of my V8's? Help for restoration please
Yes, I know that the 1940 is maroon, but there are many maroons i have seen, mandarin, claret, garnet, all different maroons, one is stated as spring color. But I guess mine is the mandarin.
For the '35 I have in cream, i thought for long time the color was original, now i have seen those charts and some they says it does not come in that color, but there are plenty of 35 for sale that state that are original and are cream color... so I guess I will stay with that... Regarding the restoration books, I have a few, the V8 affair, early V8 service manual, so I'm covered with restoring info. Thank you for all the answers! |

With respect, the '35-'36 and '40 books that deuce roadster is referring to go way beyond the almost-nothing coverage in "The V8 Affair" and any service manual.
