Default Building a late 32 driveshaft

Hi,
I just bought a complete late 32 rearend minus the driveshaft. It has the torque tube. Can I use a 1947 driveshaft cut down to build a new one? I think there may be a spline difference? Unless someone has a spare driveshaft?
Thanks

Not easily; the 32 driveshaft is tubular, whereas the 47 shaft is solid, and requires a centrally located bearing within the torque tube to eliminate the 'whip'. You are correct; easiest is to find someone with a 32 driveshaft for sale.

Have been doing some reading and someone said that a cut down Model A with a new coupler would work?

Model A-103" wheelbase, 32-106" wheelbase...A is too short. Best is make it new with 4130 steel tube and the ends from a 32-34 shaft. not easy, and not cheap.

Find a 33-34 driveshaft and shorten it.

And beware that there are two lengths for '33/'34 drive shafts, depending on whether it is 4-cylinder or V8 equipped. 1933 & 1934 V-8 driveshaft is listed at 60 5/32" and the 4-cyl at 58 7/16" in the green Ford parts book. DD

He still has to shorten it anyway. If its a V8 driveshaft it needs to be shortened 8 9/16".

No one has mentioned that there were two flavors of '32 rears. The early was simply an elongated version of the Model A without the bearing for the end of the pinion. The torque tube flange where it bolts to the banjo casting was round just like a Model A. The later was similar with the bearing supporting the nose of the pinion and the torque tube flange was scalloped.

OOPS! As "deuce lover" pointed out, I missed that in the title of the original post.

The OP mentioned that he has the late style.

You can get a coupler adapter that has different splines going in and out and use the later solid driveshaft shortened. Search the peddlers for drive shaft adapter.

Thank you, can the early 32 driveshaft be cut to fit the late rearend. I was hoping what Jim suggested would work. Any issues running a later solid driveshaft without the bearing?
Thanks
If someone has the correct driveshaft, please send me a Pm. Thanks

I've used a couple of early 32 driveshafts to make later V8 32 driveshafts. If you can get a 10 spline to 6 spline adaptor it is easier, but if you only have the 6 spline coupler you need to make up a short adaptor to bring the diameter up. Not a bad job if you have a lathe.

Good luck finding a shaft with a good front bearing surface. I have 4 or 5 here that are junk. Next is the tubes are rusty and out of balance. Last one I made the front section by cutting off the front of a later solid shaft, make bushing to fit it, press it in, weld it, then weld that into the tube which was rusty junk. Next time I will buy new tube, use a new rear coupler, and make the front.

It will be very difficult to find a true late 32 driveshaft . . . it seems that very few 32's came out with the later rear and that a lot of Hotrodders back in the day were in search of them. I would try to find a tubular 33-34 driveshaft and cut it down.

Mart, that sounds really good. Is there machine work required to use the 6 to 10 adapter?

How weak are the early rearends? I will have around 180 hp.

Thanks

Duke, I have never has the 10 to 6 adaptor so can't say. Others may comment on the axle, the most important thing is that the keyways and threads are in good condition, the hubs are lapped in and the nuts are very tight.
How accurate is your 180hp?
Mart.

Contact Cory Taulburt over on the HAMB. Early driveshafts are one of his specialties.

You do not need a center bearing on a 32. Reason they are on later models is the length of the TT. No machine work is required to use a adapter other than shortning the later solid DS.

I agree....a '32 shaft is short-enough that it's not likely to 'whip'! DD
