Default How to slow your work in one easy motion

This weekend was to be the "overhaul the front end" weekend. The goal was to completely overhaul the front axle. Schedule cleared and parts ready, picked up bushing reamer Saturday afternoon. Had only 30 minutes work remaining on a Toyota on the lift and then the attack would begin.

Lights on, air compressor running. Grabbed the dead blow to know off an old part....whack....whack...skrunck....... "oh gosh, shuckey derns, that was my left pointer finger knuckle that I just flattened. Please pardon me while I dance around the shop for 5 minutes in pain"....( or something like that....)

Delay start by 1 hour while medical needs are tended to....(30 hours later the swelling is still there)

So... now flying with only one wing.... The overhaul begins (The h*ll with the Toyota!)

Pop quiz: How do you press out old and press in new bushings in the spindle with only one hand? How do ream the same bushings with one hand? Answer: SLOWLY.

Normally I can press out an old bushing and press in a new one in less than 5 minutes. With a left hand that is in pain and can not be used it took almost an hour.

But it was the reaming that just blew my mind. Two and a half hours per side!!

But... as of 22:30 central time both spindles are back on the car and what a difference. With new bushings and properly shimmed they turn with a gentle touch. (vs needing both hands to grip and twist before.) Elapsed time for a 5 hours job........ 30 hours...so far....it isn't done.

Time to go lick wounds and get sleep before returning to salt mine in morning. Hopefully get the wheels on ground tomorrow.

Not fun!

Mr. Wzrd,

Question One: With frisky dancing & high stepping around the shop, was the radio "ON" ?

Question Two: If the music was Fast did you dance real Fast?

Question Three: Did any neighbors, family members, or friends see you high stepping real Fast?

If the answers to Questions 1 -3 are "NO", consider yourself a very lucky man who will still appear sane in public next week.

Ice can reduce swelling in some cases -- our prayers are with you -- thanks for sharing your single handed experience.

Yes, the radio was on. (Actually an ipod, not a radio. Same thing but different)

No, the music was not fast but that did not impede the speed of my dancing. I was definately steppin and fetch in.

Nope. Was out in barn, alone.

That would be awesome.....since I suspect they question my sanity all the time anyway.

Time to buy another tool. I've done the same thing and in fact I was trying to break the bead on my lawn tractor tire and flattened my left hand a week ago. I should have been using leather gloves and a curved jaw Vice Grip to hold the tire iron. They make a tool to hold the punch or chisel.

Was trying to shock a ball joint loose from a spindle and the normal whacks weren't working. I had it between my feet to keep it from sliding when I hit it. The first hit went ok but the second one glanced off the lower control arm and hit the end of my toe. Peeled my toe nail off and put a nice gash on the end of my toe. Surprised it didn't break my toe.

Good question....

I'm a computer programmer and a touch typist.....

Since I know where the keys are I can still type pretty fast with one hand. It's using ctrl, alt and shift that slow me down.

So.. although it took longer than normal it probably still took less time than most people would have taken to type the same message.

When I was a mechanic in the coal mines , I have mashed my fingers more than once, as a matter of fact a lot of times. Once I was clearing a coal Shute in the tipple, when I found a 6 foot roof bolt curled up like a horse shoe, as soon I touched it, it came loose like a coiled spring , mashed my thumb and tooked the nail right off, In the emergency room the doctor cleaned it up ,and was explaining to me how the nail would start growing back on , when I held up my other thumb and said you mean like this , which was half way on. He just shook his head and walked away.
