Judging QUestion
Although I have no interest in competing/judging I am curious as to whether there is a "objective scoring sheet" that is used or if it is just subjective with guidance from "the book"? My quartet uses the judges scores to see if we have improved, not because we are into competing or we want trophies. I think the same might apply here.
If there is a sheet, is it available to be seen or is it closely guarded by the high priests of judging? Mine will be a daily driver but I might be interested in finding out how it would judge one time just to see if there are any major issues. Although it is a daily driver I am still limiting any changes to safety or reliability. (and of course it will be dirtier than most that are being judged. ) |

Re: Judging QUestion
You really should buy the judging standards. I think it would answer so many of your questions. Also if you go on the MAFCA web site there are "tests" to become a judge, these will give you an idea of what they look at in the different areas of judging

Re: Judging QUestion
The front of the standards is a section of judging and it is supposed to work. There are scoring sheets as well.
As for objective/subjective, of course it's subjective. How can condition be objective?

Re: Judging QUestion
You can go to the MAFCA web site and down load the judging sheets for all 23 areas, you need a copy of the Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards to determine the correct parts and finish, color and pin striping, upholstery material etc. for your vehicle.

I have... it isn't here yet. For some reason they insist on parchment and quill sent by horseless carriage.

Re: Judging QUestion
It is a very objective and extremely fair process. Download the scoring sheets and the process will become much more transparent.
Each of the 23 areas is judged by a team of 3 to 4 extremely qualified individuals. My car has been through this process three times (twice MARC - once MAFCA) and the process has always been fair to everyone involved. |

Re: Judging QUestion
I have the "Judging Standards" book. Great reference material. I rather doubt that there will ever be a judge within 3,000 miles of this place, and I rather doubt that I would score 50% if it were to be judged, but I love my pickup and drive it most every day.

Re: Judging QUestion
I show my Model As at all kinds of shows from Model A national meets to our local town car show. Sometimes I get my score sheets back and they're always different. Sometimes I win, sometimes not, but I always have a good time looking at the other cars and talking to their owners.

Re: Judging QUestion
from the sounds of it the word judging should be removed.
it is sounding like a standards book. (that judges use for a reference) a standards book I can use. if it is about judging it will aerodynamically find the trash can. fwiw, the only time I venture to the dark side is to swipe cookies. :-) |

Re: Judging QUestion
fwiw
The "Restoration Guide Lines and Judging Standards" book was titled 'Judging Standards and Restoration Guide Lines". I believe that the title was changed to better reflect the value of the information in the book. Each of the 23 chapters provide accurate detailed descriptions and in some cases photos describing the correct parts for each body style, and the changes to the part from sop (start of production) to eop (end of production). The information is valuable and is a good source of information when you go to a swap meet and want to purchase the correct part. I highly recommend the book

Re: Judging QUestion
MAFCA now has a new category or class for the "daily driver". Point allocation starts out at "0 points" and is accumulated up to a maximum of 450 points. A write-up on this new class will appear in the next issue of the "Restorer".

Re: Judging QUestion
MARC has a touring class that does the same thing. Older restorations and daily drivers that have original parts not in prime condition.
