'35 backing plate bolts
Has anyone found a good way to remove these bolts. The head is a bit bigger than 11/16 and difficult to get any kind of wrench inside the grease baffle. It wants to turn with the nut and I can't get a grip. They seem to be rounded in all the wrong places.
Thanks for any ideas that might work. Last edited by 15max; 04-20-2021 at 06:21 PM. Reason: Need capitol letter |

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
I would recommend that you power wash the area to get rid of all of the grease. Then use a torch to heat up the nuts on the other side and hold the square end with a vice grip plier. Hope that helps.

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
I have an old 3/4" open end wrench that I bent to a kinda Z shape to hold them. These bolts can fight, best to make the effort to get all residue from the cotter pins out first, then lube it all up good. There is a "lock" tang too, so keep it tight against the backing plate to keep the tang engaged

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
Mart on here made a special tool that holds all 4 heads, probably more effective when re-fitting them.

Hard to get to Square Head Bolts on Backing Plate and handy "home-made" Tool to reach them. |

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
If you can get a ring of steel like a big washer and put it over the heads of the bolts, and then refit the hub so it clamps the bolts tight against the axle casing it will hold the heads in place while the nuts are removed.
A ring of plywood would probably do it. Mart. |

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
I forgot , i had first used a flat gasket scraper and a screwdriver. I just placed the flat blade between the flat on the bolt and the spindle back. It worked on all but one that had been replaced with a standard 6 sided bolt .

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
Thanks for all the kind responses. I tried the vise grips, bent wrench and several wedges with no success. Finally I made this plate to fit the head. It required a spacer to hold it against the bolt and even a large C-clamp to keep it tight. However, the nuts still would not budge until they were heated as mentioned by Gary.
One more ordeal. It certainly was satisfying when they came loose. |

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
I don't think so. While it is a simple thing to make it took me 5 hours with a hacksaw, files and a drill. A well equipped machine shop might be able to make them cheaper that I could. I could provide drawings if anyone is interested. Had I applied heat earlier the simpler tools should have worked as well.
Thanks |

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
Replace the stock bolts with Grade 8 1/2-20 SAE bolts. The hex head will provide a "wrenching" surface. Or you could tack weld a nut to the head of the OEM bolt.

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
If you'd want to sell the tool as a sample, I'd be willing to have it scanned and make a couple hundred with the local laser cutter guy

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
There has been some interest in this tool so I have made a sketch of it. I scribed a 13/16" circle and a 5/8" square for the hole. Then I drilled holes in the four corners and then the center. Then it was whittling the flats into the scribed circle with a 3/8" round coarse file and finishing it with a 3-sided one. I often checked the shape with the head of the one bolt I was able to remove. When it was pretty close I pressed the head into the hole to get the right fit. I believe these are correct dimensions but check them as you go. Some grinding on corners may be needed to get the proper fit.

Re: '35 backing plate bolts
Yesterday I disassembled the other side in two hours. The first side took two days. I only needed the tool for one bolt and only had to heat two. I was surprised to find this fibrous hair like substance inside. I can't imagine what it is or how it got there. The first thought was copper wire but it crumbles to the touch. Also some gravel was inside that was too large to sneak through the gap between drum and backing plate.
Just one more mystery. I wish 35fordtn well on the idea of making the tools. Let me know if you need me to send mine. I assume the sketch and scanning the bolt head may be all you need. Thanks again for the interest. Ford guys are the Greatest! |
