Default Trouble shooting Borg Warner O/D

Just finished a search of past threads.

I am trying to help a fellow who bought a '31 Coupe from the estate of an enthusiast who had passed away. The car has a B/W O/D and the new owner asked me to check out the car. I took care of a few minor items and then came time to check out the O/D. First thing I noticed was that the lead from the frame-mounted relay (NAPA ST86 6V continuous duty) to the O/D solenoid was disconnected. I also found that the fuse had been removed from the power lead. I reconnected relay, inserted fuse and went for a drive. Shifts fine from direct drive to freewheel no problem. When I try to engage O/D with push button on steering column, light comes on, but nothing happens. I replaced frame mounted relay. Now when I push the button the relay "chatters" but does not engage. Is the solenoid on the O/D suspect? I suspect something wasn't right, or the ,previous owner would not have disconnected the O/D and removed the fuse.

BTW, this installation has a leaf switch on the clutch pedal, I assume to disengage O/D. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Two different things control the B/W OD. You should have Lockout cable to operate in addition to the solenoid.
There are of lots of ways to wire the solenoid.
To operate the OD you must first push in the lockout cable. then let up on the gas and push the switch to engage the OD. It should engage.
Hope this helps.

Make sure the relay and solenoid are 6 volts, if you have a 6 volt battery in the car.

NEVER try to back up with the B/W overdrive engaged, or it gets damaged.

Tnx for replies! Found the problem(s). Inadequate ground on relay and leaf switch on clutch pedal needed adjustment. Works like a dream! Even a blind hog finds an ear of corn once in a while.

Thats appears to be a Lloyd Young from Ohio system. So when you are cruising you simply push in the cable, foot off the gas and press the button?

Make sure there is a heavy wire going to the solenoid. At least 12 gauge.

Yes, it was a Lloyd Young install and that was exactly how it operates. I managed to talk to Mr Young and he was very helpful.
