Default Reverse Idler Shaft query

In rebuilding a transmission from parts from several, I note that the Reverse Idler Shaft appears to have a well that feeds to a lubricating hole. Later shafts appear to be solid. Just curious about the history of this shaft; how long was it used in production etc.

The January 1929 Service Bulletin says the scoop was eliminated and the gear was drilled for lubrication.

that reverse idler pin/shaft is the early style. the early style gear is oiled through the end and enters the gear bushing in the centre of the gear.
the later style oiling system the shaft is solid and the oil enters the gear bushing through a hole in the gear.

you should not use the later style shaft with an early style gear as oiling may be an issue. remember that gear runs all the time and needs oil.

i have found that all the gears interchange between the 3 different transmission cases. the reverse idler is the same dimensions and will fit except for the oiling issue.
if you are going to use an early style case you will have to make sure to use the shims on the cluster gear so there is no endplay.

if you have no access to the newer style idler gear maybe the old style can be modified to accommodate proper oiling. just a thought i have not done that or seen it done.
