Default Crank shaft flange

Hi there,

I have a 56 ford victoria, M code, with what I thought was the original engine and transmission. I have a clanking noise at idle that goes away with revs and is not really audible whilst driving.

Suspecting that its the rivets on the flexplate, I pulled off the cover on the lower half of my bell housing to inspect the flex plate on the fordomatic.

Is this the crank flange I can see there?

Yes it is a Y-block engine and that is an original type flexplate with the steel tabs mounted with 3 rivets each.
But as I have mentioned before, it is more accurate to determine if rivets are loose by removing trans and jerking around on the tabs to see if they are loose without bellhousing in the way.

You hit a jackpot with that car, take good care of it.

Trans is out soon. It leaks a bit too.

I think the rear main seal is leaking too.

A 312 that leaks from the rear main seal? I've heard that somewhere before...

Im now intrigued as to where this motor came from the casting number is ECZ-6015-A. The valley cover has a road draft tube in it. It has a cover on the side of the block where I would expect it to be.

I need to get a valve cover off to see what the heads are.

If the block number is above the oil filter it's a Cleveland Foundry block. ECZ-A is from '56, a 312 would have been the "P" code engine that year if it was original to the car.
Click this block ID link...
http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm

A curved road draft tube from the valley pan over the bellhousing & down past the starter is a '55 / '57 T-Bird part.
I don't recall if it was used on anything else.
Does the front of the crankshaft look to have the correct pulley on it?

The heads may have their number at the front and back, under the water passage holes. (yellow circles)
They may be EZC-A, B or C

I don't think any of the '55 or '56 full-size cars had the valley pan draft tube originally. Those were only used on the Thunderbird 312. The full-size cars all had the road draft-tube and filter canister on the left side of the engine.
BTW, the picture of the crankshaft damper that dmsfrr posted on the left is the crankshaft damper that was used on all the full-sized car Y-blocks. The black one at the right is the Thunderbird crankshaft damper.

...
I suspect a valley pan with a hole at the back may have been used on early 60's (cars?) trucks with a PCV elbow, hose & valve in the back. But they had a taller oil fill tube, approx 8 inch.
T-Bird valley pans have a 6 inch tall fill tube for better hood & air cleaner clearance.

The long curved road draft tube came on '55, '56 & '57 T-Birds no matter the engine displacement, 292 or 312.
In '55 the only engine available in the T-Bird was the 4bbl 292. In '56 and '57 292's and 312's were both available, along with factory carburetor and supercharger options in '57.

The crank pulley looks normal. As suspected looking under the valve cover yielded the ford number for all heads 6090.

The block casting number is above the oil filter.

The heads are ECZ-C... I got better access to under the exhaust gasket to see with the valve cover removed.

So a 56 312... Standard for P code tbirds.... Except mines an M code on its data plate. Odds are that it's a swap from a 56 tbird of the day.

That's design intent on a Y Block. Kind of like an old Harley. Wants to mark it's spot.

Drip pans for the garage floor are a good thing.

The 312 would have been a factory option in a '56 Vic. Here's a pdf document from the Crown Victoria Assn.
https://thecvaonline.com/howtos/Data...IYsdK0Qw0Ej9fc

Having the T-Bird style road draft tube it could have been a swap from one. There would be a few other parts to swap in addition to the crank pulley. Oil pan, water pump spacer, drivers side exhaust manifold, . . .

While the valve covers were off did you happen to notice the part casting number on each rocker arm? They may be the high ratio version. http://ford-y-block.com/rockerarm.htm

Exhaust manifold is from a passenger car by the look of it.

Rocker arms have ecg 6564 a2 which probably means the higher ratio.
