Thought this was an interesting article from Hemmings on the rare 1950 Mercury two door woody wagon.

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
Yes, 1949 are 1950 Mercury's are rarer than Ford wagons of the same years. The Mercury had a longer wheelbase 118 inches versus 114 for the Ford and the rated HP was 110 and the Ford was 100. There were also several other differences but the Merc was $400 to $500 more, a lot of money in those days. That '50 is beautiful!

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
I have a book (Mercury Automobiles 1939-1959 Photo Archive) and depending on which page you believe , there was a production run of either 8,044 or 8,057 of these two door "woodies". Referred to as the model 79B and there is no mention of price. Weight of 3696 pounds.

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
There is a slight mistake in that article. Mercury only offered 2 dr wagons for '49 thru '51. From'57 thru '59 they offered 2 dr wagons along with 4 dr wagons.

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
They aren't really all that rare but they are rarely seen on the road for sure. Whom ever restored that one likely doesn't drive it daily. It still looks too clean and unscratched. They are very nice vehicles but very expensive to restore and maintain unless you do all your own wood work. I imagine there are a lot of funds tied up in that particular restoration or at least a lot of time.

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
Thought that I would attach photos of this gorgeous 1950 Mercury Woody to make it easier to view them. Unlike the 49-51 Ford Woodys, the Mercury Wagons used the same Windscreens as the other models. The Windscreens on the Ford Woodys were narrower. That is why all 49-51 Ford Woodys used the carry-over 1949 Dash, as it was also narrower, and Ford didn't want to go the the extra expense of tooling up for the redesigned dash. On the Mercury Woodys, they got the updated dash as it was the same width as the other models. |

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
Information and pictures I have states Ford and Mercury shared the same station wagon bodies in '49-'51. The differences are in the doors and front dog house, and the 4" longer Mercury wheel base looks to be from the cowl forward.

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
The bodies are a lot different. The Mercury Frame is completely different.

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
To illustrate the point that I made about the "narrower" Windscreens on the 49-51 Fords in my previous Post, check out these two photos of the "A" Pillars comparing the Woody with the Closed cars. You will notice that they are spaced further "in" on the Woody, than on all the other models, including the Convertible. That is why the 49-51 Ford Woodys had to have a special "narrow" Dash made especially for the Woodys. On the same year Mercury, the "A" Pillar is in the same position on the Woodys as it is on all the other models, so the Mercury Woodys were able to use the regular production Dash, as it fit all of models in the Mercury range. Granted, these Woody Bodies look similar, but in light of the narrower "A" Pillar on the Ford Woody Bodies, they are not identical? |

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
This 1957 Mercury Commuter 2-door Hardtop Station Wagon was imported into Australia when it was nearly new, and converted to Right Hand Drive. This photo was taken in the late Sixties. After passing through a succession of Owners, is was subsequently chopped up. That was a great shame, as these are great looking Wagons. |

Re: Mercury 2 Door Wagon
That Merc is housed in a museum, has likely never been driven further than off/on a trailer.
The owner, Chris Koch worked in sales and promotion for Ford back in the 60's and eventually started his own Ford dealership branching into other manufacturers. He sold his dealerships and finance companies to Roger Penske (of the racing family) and then retired to Florida where he is a high ranking judge for the Concours de Elegance. . |
