Anyone know how to take a slight bow out of the top of a Tillotson Carb. The top plate is not flat and leaks some fuel out of the gasket between the throat of the carb and the front of the carb. The lower portion of the carb can be flattened perfectly with some wet or dry sandpaper with some water on a truly flat surface. It is just the top that fits tight at the screws but has a leak around the bowl.

On warped stromberg 97 carbs, I place the top on a flat surface and SLIGHTLY tap the edges with a small hammer to flatten the top back out. Work with Extreme caution. Don't hit it to break it, just massage it back into shape slowly.

I heated the carb bodies in the oven @ 350 degreess for about 10 minutes and then tighten a hose clamp around the carb. This worked like a champ and straightened the top right out. There are several threads on this if you do a search.

The oven trick works pretty good for me.

Thnaks for all the suggestions. Wil try the oven trick in the next couple of weeks and let you know the results. Knew someone had an idea to try.

I don't have pictures, but I have used Greg's oven technique. I use one long clamp over a piece of flat steel on top of the flange and another on the center of the cover to flatten that area. Some pot-metal carbs are warped so much that the throttle plate area is out of round. That takes a little more work to correct.

I'd suggest you try the oven trick when you wife is out of town. It makes the whole house smell of rotten gasoline. Got an oven in your shop?

If you are talking about a bow in the flange where the carb bolts to the manifold, that can be remedied by either dressing with a long flat file or by (my preferred method) dressing on a FLAT surface with sandpaper. I have used the file method with success, but now I have a very flat 4x4 to which I attached a belt sander belt. Takes a few minutes, but the flange is easily straightened.
