32 3w door mechanism

was badly worn. The passenger side was fine. Brookville makes one that looks spot on at first glance. 3W door mechanisms are quite elaborate. The reason for posting this review is to let restorers know the differences and how to fix it. The working mechanism of the reproduction looks spot on with the original. To hold the assy in the door the original uses two 12-24 cage nuts. The reproduction uses two 12-24 d-nuts. This would be find, but the cage nuts do not line up with the counter sunk holes in the front door edge. You will need to grind the outer face of the d-nuts and drive them out. As viewed from the front door edge you'll need to move both d-nuts .030 up and out. The distance between them remains the same. Not doing this will pinch the assy and bind the plunger. Also missing is the 19 gauge, .0418 dog leg strap, spot welded to the assy to help hold the upholstered door panel against the assy. Unless your originals are in excellent shape I would recommend replacing both latch assy's as well as the strikers. In not doing so, you run the high risk of the door inadvertently opening destroying your door, hinges and B pillar. |
