Default Advance/Retard rod barely touches Head Nut

31 coupe is new to me.

Before timing the distributor, I loosened the clamp on the steering column at the steering box (above too) and adjusted the column to allow the full range of timing retard and advance within the 1" opening in the side of distributor body. The rod both was and still is barely touching the head nut that it passes near. The rod rotates so I'm not sure it would be beneficial to bend it.

This motor has float a motor mounts. Could it be sitting too high say about 1/2" or so?? Can the arm on the distributor bottom plate be bent???

Comments please?

Under normal conditions, the spark control rod is fairly close to the head.
It is possible that the rear of the engine is slightly high. Another place to look would be the front motor mount. How is the crank alignment ?

The engine moves up & down while driving, so it may be pushing the spark advance rod.

I had the same situation. Rather than worry about it I went with the NuRex
timing/advance kit. (centrifugal advance). Just live the lever at the top. 0 degree position. Works great.

I slightly put a small arc to mine just to get it up maybe an eighth inch. Worked for me
