Re: Got the old girl home
Is there by chance a date on the "gastank" firwall on the drivers side?
Can you find the assembly plant code on the body's floor subframe? See this article to know more about it...Not sure if Canadian built bodies put the assembly plant code on their bodies or not. http://www.plucks329s.org/pdf/studie...ND%20CODES.pdf Pluck Last edited by Steve Plucker; 07-31-2016 at 11:51 AM. |

Re: Got the old girl home
Yes the tag is Canadian. It's like the US cars but says Build in Canada and it mounted on the passenger side. only used on early cars. Later cars there was no plate only the mounting holes.
Welcome to the Barn a great place for contacts and info. John Poole P.S. If rub a little vegetable oil over the plate it may bring back enough info to see what was there. JP |

Thanks for the info all. I haven't cleaned the firewall off, there is a bit if grunge on it but I want to take my time so as not to loose anything that might be under. Great site pluck, I will be sure to refer to it.

Re: Got the old girl home
I used diesel to soak my firewall, then after a few days of soaking I used a soft paint brush and WD-40 to clean the grunge off. The original paint came out looking nice.

Re: Got the old girl home
I worked on the the ign and fuel system yesterday. Touched up the points and cleaned the dist inners and lubed the dist cam. Put a little charge into the old battery and spin the crank with the wife watching for a spark at a lead. Success! Today I got the filter screen out of the filler. Still cleaning out the fuel tank so I filled the carb bowl again and spun the crank for real with the ign on. She hit on a couple! Tried again and got a bit of a kick back. Good enough. Drained the oil to prevent the urge to make her go with the old stuff. Will pick up some oil to run it in with tomorrow.
A few questions ..... #1 how many quarts? 5? #2 What size is the hex on the drain plug? It's a brass plug, 1 1/8 or 1 1/16 ? Someones been using a "Saskatchewan all 16th" wrench on it so I will try to resize it to the correct size #3 I stuck my finger up the oil drain hole and encountered what appears to be a spring loaded disc/surface. When I push the disc it seems to release some more oil out of the drain hole. What is going on there? Regards, Frank |

Re: Got the old girl home
Sounds like you might have sludge in the drain hole.
Just use a ruler across two opposite flats to determine the wrench size for the drain plug. |

Re: Got the old girl home
Word of advice, Take off oil pan and clean it. I was tempted to get my 31 going and skip cleaning the pan. but something was telling me, better clean the pan! I gave in and dropped it. The pan was half full of Sludge, Pick up screen was blocked To sum it up drop pan and Clean. Love your car!!

Re: Got the old girl home
As I go I am learning some stuff .... My car being a '28 has the oil pan with the cover that allows the removal of the oil pump with out removing the pan. [28 only?]
I removed the cover and the oil pump dropped out. I found out the answer to my previous question was... when I pushed up on the "disc" thru the drain hole I was actually pushing against the oil pump which is supposed to be held up by a spring against the removable plate. The spring was present but was damaged and not holding the pump up all the way. There is enough sludge in the pan that I guess I will take the advise to remove and clean it before starting up. Is the pump supposed the be held to the block in some manner? This '28 pan is convenient for installing the oil pump after the pan is on but how is one supposed to install a pan while holding the pump in position if one has the later pan with no pump access hole? Regards, Frank |

Re: Got the old girl home
Frank, I would use the SEARCH feature to read the many threads on "holding the oil pump in place".

Re: Got the old girl home
Frank,
Take some pictures and show us the sludge that you find in the pan and the valve chamber. I remember cleaning out a valve chamber once that was filled with sludge and also contained 10 or 15 small snail shells. |
