Re: Got the old girl home
Look where the tank line of bolts runs side to side. The tank date is just above that seam and on the driver's side.
Cars should always be stored with the tops up. Your Corvette top may not fit now if it's been down for a long time. Those irons are for the floorboards. |

Re: Got the old girl home
Dont try to start it untill you clean out the oil pan . It will be full of old gunge that you will pump around the engine if you dont do this . Also the valve chest ,the main bearings are fed from this and it needs to be clean . If you are not mechanically minded the learned guys on the barn will talk you through it.

Re: Got the old girl home
Yes floor board irons as Tom mentioned. If you need any more I have a set of them.
It was said that on the early Model A's, Ford used box boards that were used to ship parts to him, as the floor boards. Thus the need for these irons to tie all the boards together for a floor board. If I am wrong, guys that know more than I do, please correct me.

Re: Got the old girl home
Thanks all for the feedback, I will keep the irons with the car then - I had heard the story of the shipping boxes. I think they were Oak? In speaking with old time body men/street rodders I was told that Ford used a better grade of wood than the competitors.
Can anyone help me with some of my other questions? Any thoughts on what caused the deep scratches on the top 1/2 of the outside? I don't think anyone was haulin' big rolls of barbed wire :-) Why do I think that there was another tag on the fire wall besides the one that I can';t read anymore? I have an engine starter crank with a sheared pin, I am going to replace it, can some one please tell me how wide/long the pin needs to be? Thanks, Frank |

Nice
I wouldn't restore it. Just tidy it up, make it safe and keep the memories. They are only new once

Re: Got the old girl home
The original hand crank was one piece with the lugs being oval shaped.
I can measure mine tomorrow when I'm in the garage, but off hand I'd guess they protrude about 5/16" on each side. |

Re: Got the old girl home
I reckon I'd need to see a photo of the scratches to form an opinion about how they got there, but I once inflicted a nasty scratch on my old '27 Chev tourer while taking the top down, so that's quite possible. It's probably just academic now anyway, and if you fix this car up enough to drive, they'll become part of its "story", albeit an unknown part!

Re: Got the old girl home
Hello all. I am cleaning out the fuel system. Looking into the Fuel filler I see that there is a strainer screen in the shape of a tube. Is this screen assembly removable for cleaning? Does it drop it or is there a retaining ring that needs to be removed? I have it soaking in penatrant. I want to make sure before I pry and bend it.

Re: Got the old girl home
Hi 00fxd, If there are more than one set of holes near the tag on the fire wall, which was a patent data plate if nobody responded, then it probably was a body tag. It would be rectangular about 3/4" high and 2 or inches long.

Re: Got the old girl home
They sure don't look like regular wear and tear from putting the top up and down! Looks like Edward Scissorhands has been getting in and out of every door! Adds to the patina, though! Protect it and keep it.

Re: Got the old girl home
raccoons, cats, rats and Opossums probably used it for an easy shelter while it was stored outside.....
